Note from the Principal

Welcome to the 2022-23 School Year!

We are so excited for the year ahead and can’t wait to welcome our students and families back to school! School will resume for our E1 and E2 students on Tuesday, September 6 and on Thursday, September 8 for our High 5 and Children’s House students.School doors open at 9:15 A.M. and school starts at 9:30 A.M.

As we prepare for this year, I have so much hope. Seward staff have been working hard over the past couple of weeks planning for how we will provide an engaging and inclusive Montessori experience throughout the school year. This planning has focused on our individual classroom environments as well as our Seward environment as a whole. We look forward to more opportunities this year to meaningfully engage with our families through having monthly family nights, increasing our volunteer opportunities, and engaging our students, families and staff in opportunities to provide input that will support the growth of our community and Montessori program.

Thursday, September 1, we welcome families to join us at our back-to-school open house from 4:00-6:00 p.m. This is great opportunity to meet the teachers your children will have, see classrooms and the various spaces throughout the school building, and connect with other Seward staff and families. We hope to see many of you there!

In partnership and gratitude,

Ana Bartl

Seward Montessori Principal

Welcome back to school! And welcome to the first issue of our monthly PTA newsletter, The Shark News! (Formerly known as the Seward Splash.) This newsletter will get sent home once per month in your child’s backpack and via school email. We hope it helps families stay connected about school activities and the many ways to get involved!

Here are 2 calls to action for September:

  • Room parent help needed. Being a room parent is a great way to get involved in your child's class, support the teacher, and build community. Go to: roomparent.sewardmontessori.org.

  • The Fall Family Potluck Picnic is back this year! We hope your family can come. It will be Friday, Sept. 16 from 5:30-7. Bring a dish to share (if you like - it’s fine to just come and hang out, too!) and sit with your child’s classmates. You’ll get a flier and more information soon.

The Seward Montessori PTA (Parent Teacher Association) is a parent-run organization that works to strengthen and support education and community at Seward Montessori. We meet every month in the evening and have lots of other ways to get involved. Learn more at https://seward.mpls.k12.mn.us/PTA

Volunteer in School

Family involvement is a vital and vibrant part of Seward Montessori. We invite you to participate!

To volunteer inside the school, you must attend a one-time orientation with Seward's Family Liaison Kerry Cashman.

In-person orientation is Wednesday September 14, 21 or 28 from 9:45-10:15 AM in the school's garden, or contact [email protected].

Spotlight: School Garden

Seward’s wonderful school garden is a volunteer-led effort that is open to all families from school and our larger community.

Kids (and families) can help tend the garden, harvest the delicious veggies, and enjoy the peace of this beautiful spot. All are welcome!

Weekly work times will start again Thursdays after school, until 7:30. If students come and help, we ask that a parent/caregiver also stay around. We also are hoping to expand the use of the garden as a teaching space for Seward classes - please email [email protected] if you would like to volunteer to help make this happen!

Seward's Site Council includes parents, staff, principal, and assistant principal. The purpose of the group is to support school-based policies and the School Improvement Plan. Seward's Site Council typically meets the first Friday of the month at 8 AM. (The first meeting will be Sept 9 at 8 A.M. and is open to all to attend.)

The Site Council chair, Katie Nissly, can be reached at [email protected].
