STIs are on the rise:
Sexual health resources at Brandeis

Sexually transmitted Infections (STIs) are prevalent among young adults, with half of all new STIs occurring among 15-24 year olds. Rates are rising around the country as well as here on campus. Barrier methods (like condoms) are one of the most popular and effective ways to prevent the spread of STIs.

Condoms are available for free in the Health Center waiting room. A broader selection of condoms and other safer sex products are available for a minimal fee at  Student Sexuality Information Service (SSIS)  on the third floor of the Shapiro Campus Center during their business hours, 11 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday.

Many STIs can initially be asymptomatic (without symptoms) so it is important to get tested. The Health Center provides confidential, targeted STI testing visits (30 minutes). STI testing can also be included as part of a comprehensive health visit (50 minutes), which assures a holistic review of your health. Other sexual health services at the Health Center include:

The best way to schedule a sexual health visit is to call the Health Center to speak to a confidential receptionist at 781-736-3677. They will answer any questions you may have.

What to do when you're feeling S.A.D. with an image of a polar bear wearing a winter hat
Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) is a type of depression that comes and goes with the seasons. People affected by S.A.D. typically experience depression during the winter months, and feel better during the spring and summer months. S.A.D. is more common in geographical areas farther from the equator.

Here are some things you can do:
  • Get outside and take advantage of available sunlight
  • Plan fun activities for the winter season
  • Plan physical activities and try to keep active
  • Monitor your mood and energy level
  • When symptoms develop seek help sooner rather than later

When to get help:
It's normal to have days when you feel down or sad, but if you are experiencing the following symptoms for days at a time, it's a good idea to seek support.
  • Low energy
  • Hypersomnia (sleeping a lot)
  • Overeating/craving for carbohydrates
  • Social withdrawal (feel like “hibernating”)
  • Other common symptoms of depression (sadness or depressed mood, loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, difficulty concentrating, hopelessness)

If you're experiencing symptoms, seek help sooner rather than later. Please reach out to the Brandeis Counseling Center (BCC). You can cal l 781-736-3730 to schedule an appointment, or connect with one of the Community Therapists located at various sites around campus.
