PROGRAM OVERVIEW

In addition to providing most cellular ATP through oxidative phosphorylation, mitochondria also participate in cellular calcium homeostasis. In this session, we will discuss how mitochondrial calcium transport is regulated and the functional responses to changes in mitochondrial calcium transport under a variety of conditions, including dietary interventions.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Kowaltowski is an MD/PhD (State University of Campinas, Brazil/ University of Maryland, USA) and trained as a post-doc at the Oregon Graduate Institute, USA. She is currently a Full Professor of Biochemistry at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, where she heads the Energy Metabolism Lab. She is an SfRBM Fellow and previously served as SfRBM Vice-President of Education & Professional Development. Alicia is also a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow and a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. Her work focuses on mitochondrial energy metabolism, including mitochondrial ion transport and redox state, how energy metabolism is impacted by dietary interventions, and how mitochondrial function influences age-related disease.
