A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JAY
|
Yizkor means, "May God remember" or "God will remember". This is the definition but, in reality, it isn't only about God remembering; I think it is mostly about us remembering. We have lost someone and we do not want to forget that person; and that person would not have wanted to be forgotten.
Why do I consider this issue now? This Saturday, April 7, 2018, will be the first Yizkor service since my mom passed. I don't want to forget the voice, the smile, the laugh, the kind words, the gentle touch. I don't want to forget the life-lessons she taught me.
And this past week, as Passover began, we ensured that my mom would not be forgotten. We held the first Seder in the Social hall at the JCC. Why the social hall you ask? Aren't Seders usually held at home? Because we were 37 people. With blessing, all of my Israeli relatives (including my mom's baby sister, Aunt Estelle) came to LBI to share the Seder with their American relatives. That is 17 Israeli adults and 2 babies, plus, 18 family and friends from the States. The Seder, indeed our entire time together was in honor, and in memory, of my mom.
We sat around the reading the Haggadah, talking, singing, and eating, until 1:00 in the morning.
We had services in the morning, led with the joy that the holiday cries for. And then we all got together for the community Seder on Saturday evening. As you may know, in Israel there is no second Seder, so our community extravaganza was a treat for them. Again, we all participated in the Haggadah, sang songs, ate and danced.
My relatives had such fun that they are looking forward to spending some time with us when our community travels to Israel this coming October. If you have not signed up, I look forward to hearing from you!
What a joy it was to be together, and how meaningful it was to remember my mom, Zena Jay, with most of our loved ones during this first Passover after her passing.
This year the Passover Yizkor service will have meaning, and we will pray fervently for God to remember. But even before the Yizkor service, we have had the honor of remembering and honoring, and we have expressed our love. Remembering is a holy act.
Join us this Saturday morning to remember and to honor your loved one(s).

The Last Two Days of Passover In a Nutshell
What and How We Celebrate
The seventh and eighth days of
Passover are celebrated as
Yom Tov, holidays, capping the weeklong celebration that begins with the first
Seder. In
Israel, only the seventh day is celebrated. In Hebrew, the last two days are known as Shvii shel
Pesach (Seventh of Passover) and
Acharon shel Pesach (Last of Passover), respectively.
What Happened on the Seventh Day of Passover?
On the 15th day of the month of Nissan, the children of Israel left Egypt, where they had served as slaves for generations. Despite his original stubborn refusal, after 10 debilitating plagues, Pharaoh relented and allowed Israel to leave Egypt for a three-day spiritual retreat in the desert.
Three days later, when the Israelites failed to return, Pharaoh realized that they were gone for good, safely on their way to independence and freedom in the Promised L
and. He bridled his best warhorse and called his nation to join him in pursuit of his erstwhile slaves.
After a short chase, the Egyptian army caught up with the Israelites at the banks of the red sea. The Israelites were trapped; there was nowhere to go but into the sea.
Then
G-d commanded
Moses to raise his staff and the sea split, allowing the Israelites to comfortably cross on dry land. When the Egyptians attempted to follow the Israelites across, the sea came crashing down on them. Chariots, riders and horses all perished in the sea.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Moses led the Israelites in singing the Song of the Sea. Miriam led the women in an additional song of thanks, accompanied by tambourines and drums.
This miracle took place in the wee hours of the morning of the Seventh of Passover.
Please help us create a special atmosphere by not using electronic devices (phones, cameras, games etc) in or around the synagogue on Shabbat and Holidays. No
food or drink is permitted in the sanctuary.
