A HIGH HOLIDAY VIDEO FROM RABBI MICHAEL JAY
A HOLIDAY MESSAGE FROM THE JCC PRESIDENT
L’Shana Tovah Tikateivu v’teichateimu to our entire JCC community.

As we embark on the New Year 5783, let us commit to listening more than we speak, thinking before we talk, welcoming debate and respecting differences of opinion, prioritizing those we love over distractions and diversions, protecting the freedoms we enjoy in the greatest nation and constitutional republic known in history, and standing up to anti Semitism no matter from where it emanates and confronting anti Semites no matter who they are. And let us pray for peace in the Ukraine and in other war torn and ravaged lands where there is much suffering.

I extend my thanks and the thanks of the Board to Rabbi Jay and Cantor Geller for their stellar leadership during the year and now during Yom Tov.

As a community we have so much to be grateful for post pandemic. We have not only endured, but we have thrived. Now we must join together to ensure the vibrancy and continuing success of our congregation.

Again, may you be inscribed in the Book of Life and may you have a sweet and healthy New Year.

Phil Rosenzweig

THOUGHTS FROM YOUR SHABBAT REMINDER EDITOR

Many of us were mesmerized watching the funeral procession for Queen Elizabeth II this week. A great deal of history marched down the streets of London to Westminster. The choreography, the pageantry, so carefully planned.  People throughout the world will remember the scene the day Queen Elizabeth was buried.

As the Holy Days fast approach, we see there is tradition too in these Days of Awe. We can picture the Torahs dressed in white with their shiny silver crowns and breast plates. We can hear the call – “Kol Nidre” - and remember Kol Nidres of our youth.  The sound of the Shofar stirs our hearts. The smell of our Bubbe’s brisket reminds us that the holiday is here.

All these things and more are our Jewish choreography, our traditions, our ritual. What would our lives be without them? If we do not re-create them each year, will they be forgotten?

The British know how to pomp and ceremony. We do too.

In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. You are also welcome to share with the minyan some special memories of your loved one.

ENDOWMENT FUND

Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio.

Since then, three additional individual Endowment Funds have been established. Other members are encouraged to also provide for the future of our JCC by establishing similar funds. Please consider adding to this number.

A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
