Sending Assistance to the Community in Surfside

As our hearts ache for all of the families who are missing members due to the building collapse in Surfside, we join them in turning to God in the hope that the rescue teams are able to save as many lives as possible. In addition let us each, before Shabbat, contribute to the local efforts to support the families, through either the Greater Miami Jewish Federation or The Shul of Bal Harbor.

Sharing Privilege: Making Space for Boaz and Ruth
The Goldman Home || 1529 S. Crest Drive
Childcare Available at The Fax Home || 1509 Livonia Ave.

Within our Shul community there exist economic, social, identity and other disparities which in turn affect social and religious access in myriad ways, including in many well-hidden ways. Our community is invited to share and to listen to the stories of community members who are often overlooked, to the end of making our community a more inclusive and participatory space. Just as Boaz opened his field for Ruth to glean, we will together identify ways to enlarge our space for the many Ruths among us. Panelists include Rabbanit Alissa Thomas-Newborn, BCC and BDJ Members Cindy Kaplan Abrookin, and Rhoda Weisman.
COVID Post-June 15th Updates

  • Vaccinated - Fully Vaccinated individuals will be able to join us without masks for shul and for kiddush (yes, kiddush is back!).
  • Unvaccinated - Unvaccinated individuals (including kids under 12) must continue to wear a mask at all times while in the building. We welcome you to join us in the social hall after davening to socialize and, if you would like, to pick up a to-go container to enjoy kiddush once you leave. space
THIS WEEK
The fast of Shiva Asar B'Tammuz (the Seventeenth of Tammuz) will be observed this Sunday, June, 27th. Shiva Asar B'Tammuz begins the period of mourning leading to Tisha B’av, known as "The Three Weeks."

Sunday, June 27th
4:32 AM - Fast Begins
8:00 AM - Shacharit with Selichot
7:40 PM - Mincha / Dvar Torah / Ma'ariv
8:41 PM - Fast Ends

During The Three Weeks, we commemorate the sieges of Jerusalem which culminated in the destruction of the city and the exiling of its inhabitants (in 586 BCE and 70 CE). Over this period, we refrain from having our hair cut and from attending and participating in joyous gatherings and most kinds of celebrations. On the Shabbatot during The Three Weeks, we read three Haftarah selections (known as the שלש דפורענותא) which give the prophets' perspectives on the circumstances surrounding the destruction of the first Temple.

Weekday Minyanim

A BDJ COMMUNITY WRITING PROJECT
What We’ve Learned:
Looking Back at the Unforgettable Years of 5780 and ‘81

Each of us has learned important things over the past year and a half, about life, love, and what's really important. Every one of us is invited to contribute to a compendium of thoughts that we are compiling to be called: What We’ve Learned: Looking Back at the Unforgettable Years of 5780 and ‘81.

We’re going to publish the compendium as a beautiful booklet and have copies for everyone in shul on Rosh HaShana, as a source of thought and inspiration for the new year ahead. To participate, all you need to do is to  compose your 1-2 paragraph reflection (not more!) and submit it to us by August 1st.spa
