Building Bridges: Teens and Parents from Black Churches and an Orthodox Shul
The Naftalin-Nelson Home 1538 S. Canfield Ave | Childcare On-Site
Shabbat, July 31, 5:00 PM

Join the discussion as Black and Jewish parents and teens share their experiences as participants in two dynamic programs over the past year. Parents of teens and young children from BDJ and Faithful Central Bible Church (FCBC) in Inglewood came together in a series of discussion groups, led by Rabbanit Alissa and Pastor Kasey. On a separate track, teens from BDJ and First AME Church participated in a series of meetings to speak frankly and transparently about their experiences of stereotyping and prejudice, under the professional facilitation of Dr. Claudia Shields, Associate Professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

Tikkun Olam: Giving Spirit and BDJ
August 5th-10th
Contact: Albie Cohen

Many of us have many fond and meaningful memories of packing (and delivering) survival kits for the homeless, through our annual partnership with The Giving Spirit. While the pandemic forced The Giving Spirit to suspend much of its operation, they have just invited us to volunteer with them in August (5th-10th), in a setting that will be created with health concerns very much in mind. Volunteers will be packing kits specifically designed for women and girls, who represent the fastest growing and most vulnerable segment of homelessness. There are two shifts per day from August 5th to August 10th, with each shift lasting 2-3 hours, but volunteers are welcome to stay longer. Full details are here. Please take advantage!!!
Shabbat, August 14 - How in the world did Covid-Halacha work?? Part Two - You Can (or Can’t) Do That Over Zoom?!?
Location: The Weinreb Home, 1735 S. Canfield Ave
Childcare: The Adatto Home, 1751 S. Canfield Ave
What We’ve Learned:
As We Ever-So-Slowly (and Unevenly) Emerge From Covid
Even as we’re realizing that we’re not yet “Post-Covid” unfortunately, we already know that we have each learned important things over the past year and a half–things about life, love, and what's really important. Every one of us is invited to contribute to a compendium of thoughts that we are compiling to be called: What We’ve Learned: Looking Back at the Unforgettable Years of 5780 and ‘81.

Some have referenced these prompts to reflect on their experiences:

  1. What are some things you have realized you cannot live without?
  2. What are some things you have realized are not actually necessary?
  3. What has “community” come to mean, both in terms of who your community is and how community functions?
  4. What are the new, creative ways you have built and maintained friendships?
  5. How has your connection to or feelings about family changed?
  6. What’s something you have done that you probably would never have done otherwise?
  7. What kind of person do you hope to be “after”?
  8. What have you gained? What have you lost?
  9. What is a change that you will try to hold onto? Why?
