A Taste of Torah

Prepared by Rabbi Matt Shapiro

Rabbinic Intern

Temple Beth Am

Next month, I will be ordained as a rabbi. This is a goal that I have each been working toward for a number of years now alongside my classmates, and it's a very exciting time for each of us and our families. Though there's no doubt how much hard work we have each put in, there came a certain point at which it was clear we would each be completing the program in May. Even when our ordination date was set, however, we took it on ourselves to keep learning, to keep meeting with faculty members and rabbis in the field, to keep exploring personal and professional opportunities. Though it may have been possible to mark the date on the calendar and do the bare minimum until that day, each of us, in our way, has found ways to deepen our experience through our actions.

This week's parsha, Shmini, begins with a fascinating section. On the eighth day after the Tabernacle has been completed, Moses tells Aaron that he should oversee a number of sacrifices because God will be appearing to the people. The sacrifices are completed as required, but God does not yet appear. It is only after both Aaron and Moses each bless the people that the Presence of God emerges from the tent. With all of the detailed instructions Moses has given Aaron, why did it not also mention the necessity of blessing the people, something that seems to be a prerequisite for the end goal to occur?

We are unable to know if God would have appeared even if both Moses and Aaron had not offered their blessings. However, this extra effort by each of them, within the context of the narrative, seems to be the tipping point that enables this overwhelming experience. By taking on additional responsibility and commitment, Moses and Aaron facilitate an overwhelming spiritual experience for the people. So too do we each have opportunities in our lives to take on additional responsibilities and actions to enhance that which is already present.

As many of you know, we are currently in the middle of counting the Omer, a ritual through which we recognize each day between the holidays of Pesach and Shavuot. It is possible that, as the weeks go by, one could count the Omer every single day, but not necessarily think about it in any deeper way or consider the process it symbolizes. On the other hand, one could also look at this process as a pathway to Sinai, an invitation to prepare for receiving Torah in a few weeks, and take on commitments of study and personal reflections in order to get ready for this event, which would, in turn, offer a greater likelihood of it being a meaningful day.

May we each find the opportunities in our lives to take on commitments and actions that deepen our potential for personal, spiritual and religious growth as we move to Sinai.
