About Shabbat Naso
Parshat Naso begins with another census, this time of the Levites and their duties. Then on to reparations for lying under oath, and then a fascinating procedure for determining whether or not a wife has been unfaithful to her husband. The suspected adulteress, called SOTAH, is to drink a potion administered by the High Priest, the Kohen Gadol. It is reminiscent of the "She's a witch!" scene in the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. She drinks this potion of dirt, burnt words on a paper, and holy water. If nothing happens, she's not an adulteress. If, on the other hand, her thigh sags and her belly distends, then she is an adulteress.

While it sounds as silly as the Monty Python scene, it was actually a way to assuage the anger of an irrational husband who might do bodily harm to his wife even if he merely suspected her of adultery. This Biblical spell takes away that possibility by "proving" the husband's suspicions to be wrong.

Following this comes information about the rules of the Nazirite, who is held to the highest standards of purity, and then the famous Priestly Benediction, the Birkat Kohanim which has become part of the daily service.
