Dear friends,

As we enter 2025, I reflect on the year past. There have been a multitude of challenges we have faced as individuals and as a community. Yet there have been many inspiring experiences as well, one of which I will share in this week’s Shabbat message.

Early December, I had the privilege of accompanying Rabbi Menachem Blum and Dr. Aisha Sherazi on a school visit to Colonel By Secondary School. We all know Rabbi Blum as the spiritual leader and executive director of the Chabad Ottawa Torah Centre. Dr. Sherazi is a Muslim woman, a writer, educator and spiritual counsellor.

Rabbi Blum and Dr. Sherazi have been collaborating as interfaith leaders for over 14 years, presenting to students of all ages throughout the city and surrounding area. During my visit to Colonel By last month, I sat as an observer, in awe of what unfolded before my eyes.

Working together, Rabbi Blum and Dr. Sherazi have designed a brilliant, educational workshop. There were two presentations that morning. The first was to a group of 250 senior high school students, the second was to a smaller group of student school leaders.

As the students entered the auditorium, the immediate visual of having a Muslim woman standing side by side with an orthodox Rabbi, was the first step in the educational experience. In a most creative approach, Rabbi Blum and Dr. Sherazi guided the students into recognizing that we all form stereotypes and bring unconscious biases into how we approach and interact with individuals in our day-to-day lives. These prejudices which we may not even be aware of inevitably shape our impressions, our words and our actions, potentially creating divisiveness and discrimination.

Rabbi Blum and Dr. Sherazi share the powerful message that even with diverse backgrounds, there is more that connects us than divides us. And between themselves, while they can disagree on certain things, they appreciate the importance and significance of maintaining their friendship based on many shared values and mutual respect.

In both sessions, the students were engaged and seemingly yearning to learn the important lessons being presented. Dr. Sherazi’s and Rabbi Blum’s approach made them feel comfortable and safe to openly share their thoughts and feelings. Their comments and questions were honest, insightful and wise, and left me feeling hopeful.

During the sessions I kept turning to look at the group of students. I thought that even if the messaging impacted only a handful of students in the audience, the potential impact and ripple effect would be tremendous.

During this time in our history, when we are witnessing an increase in hate and divisiveness in our community, the workshop focuses on the idea that whatever our politics, faith, culture, race, religion we have far more in common than there are differences.

The Ottawa community is blessed to have Dr. Sherazi and Rabbi Blum working together as role models for our youth. Education serves to empower them to become the leaders and voices in our community, speaking out against hatred and discrimination, encouraging positive change and shaping our future.

May Rabbi Blum and Dr. Sherazi continue to inspire younger generations to embrace mutual respect, understanding, and compassion for others, ensuring a path forward towards a more peaceful world for all.

Wishing you and your families a peaceful Shabbat,

Karen
