Sponsored jointly by the Women's Auxilliary and Chaverah Group, 12 members and friends traveled to see the mavelous Ruth Bader Ginsburg exhibit in Philadelphia. The group was so impressed by her accomplishments and the way the exhibit was organized. Note the collars made from doillies from our kitchen. Lunch followed at the Bourse Food Hall. Thanks to Suzy Geier for organizing the trip. Look for future activities sponsored by

A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

This past January 5th, I chose to participate in what has been referred to as the worlds largest book group. The program is called "Daf Yomi". Essentially I will over the next 7.5 years I have committed to reading one page a day of the Talmud. Daf Yomi literally means "page of the day".

While reading a page a day may not seem like much, consider a few things. In a good English translation each page of Talmud is anywhere from 10 - 12 pages. If this still doesn't seem like much, please consider that most of it is not written in chronologic or "story" form. The topics bounce around and much of it consists of conversations (or arguments) between Rabbis. And if that still doesn't seem tough, consider the fact that in Rabbinical School, we could spend 2 weeks on one page of Talmud. Oy.

That said my expectation is that over the course of the next 7.5 years I will learn lessons that I will want to share with you.

The Talmud is a compilation of the Mishnah (Rabbi Judah HaNasi's attempt to codify the Torah), published in 200 CE, and the Gemarra (in which generations of the great rabbis of Babylonia and Israel discuss the Mishnah in great detail).  The Talmud, itself, was initially compiled around 500 CE.

The beginning of this trek places us in a Mesekhet Berachot, which covers the rules of prayers, primarily the Shema, the Amidah and blessings for various circumstances.

The first thing that I have noticed is how old our liturgy is. The conversations that are recorded in the Mishnah began around 200 BCE.   Though quite early, it discusses large portions of our prayer services and the traditions that we follow. For instance, it discusses how and when to say the Shema and the Amidah. This means that much of what we find in our prayer book existed before 200 BCE. In fact, the original form of the Amidah may have been compiled as early as 500 BCE.

It is amazing how old our prayers really are, and how much meaning they still have for us today.

We should never lose sight of how ancient and amazing we Jews really are.

I will try to learn, and I will try to teach. In the end we will, together, help to continue our beautiful traditions.

Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay
