A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

This week's Torah portion provides the instruction to have a continuously burning oil lamp in the portable Tabernacle. From the Jewish Virtual Library we learn that An Eternal Light (Ner Tamid) hangs above the ark in every synagogue. It is often associated with the menorah the seven-branched lamp stand which stood in front of the Temple in Jerusalem. It is also associated with the continuously-burning incense altar which stood in front of the Ark (see First Kings Chapter 6).
Where once the Ner Tamid was an oil lamp, as was the menorah which stood outside the Temple, today most are fueled by either gas or electric light bulbs. The Eternal Lights are never extinguished or turned off.

O ur sages interpreted the Ner Tamid as a symbol of God's eternal and imminent Presence in our communities and in our lives. I would posit another message. Perhaps it should be considered the light of eternal vigilance.

I know from various emails and conversations over this past week that many of us are extremely disturbed by the anti-Semitic behavior we have seen from elected officials and their supporters over the last few weeks. We should be concerned and we should not remain silent. The attempts by some to minimize, downplay, or "explain away" the anti-Jewish words of others cannot be accepted.

The eternal light reminds us to see what is going on in the world around us and to take steps to fight those who seek to do us harm. What steps can we take? How can we protect our future and ourselves? First, sign up online to be informed. Some organizations that regularly provide information are: HonestReporting.com, CAMERA.org, standwithus.com, and Timesofisrael.com. The best way to confront irrational hate and prejudice is be fully informed. I am always available to discuss issues as they arise.

As I have said in the past, I am highly recommending that you join me at the AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington. This year it is from March 24th - 26th. If you have not registered, and are a first-timer, I might be able to get you a discount.

Come to the JCC, at your convenience, to see our beautiful eternal light. It has blue glass around it that gives the appearance of being both flames and waves. To strengthen our Jewish community and culture, I highly recommend "doing" Jewish. Come to services. Come study Torah. Come to our monthly Shabbat dinners and our Saturday luncheons. Come to our programs and films. You don't have to commit to do everything, but we hope that you will see something that interests you. As always, if you would like us to do something that you are not seeing, please reach out to me, to the office, or to any board member.

There are eternal problems confronting an eternal people, guided by an eternal light prescribed by an eternal God. Let the light lead us to those seeking to do us harm and may we be united in our effort to dim their nefarious plans.

Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay
