A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JAY
|
SADNESS IN TIMES OF CHAOS
This week has seen a tragedy of immeasurable proportion. Many beautiful souls, mostly children, have been summarily taken from us. One beautiful child is directly connected to our community. And there are no answers. And we cry, and we cry.
The pain and sadness coursing through our bodies and souls is unspeakable, as are the feelings of inadequacy. We have seen this before and each time we bellow out vows that it will not happen again. And yet, we have been unable to stop it.
Are we really unable, or have we lacked the will? Each day we should be looking in the mirror and posing the following question: "Have I done enough to end this insanity?"
The Jewish people are a people of action, and we have failed to take action. I do not pretend to know what the answer is, but I do know that there is a solution if we are willing to make it so. Remember the words of Theodore Herzl: "If you will it, it is no dream". His dream was to create a nation for a people; our dream should be to save the people of our nation.
Today we have, and hear, only searing, burning questions. And we have no answers. So what are we to do? Our tradition hints at one method for addressing the problem. The answer might lie in the quintessential theological statement of our Jewish tradition, the Shema.
Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad.
Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, The Lord is One.
The first word, "Shema", means to "hear", or "listen". Our tradition tells us that the first thing we must always do is to listen. We need to hear. We need to let those asking the questions know that we are listening. The questioner needs to know that we hear him or her. The questioner needs us to be present; and the questioner needs to know that we will stay present.
We must listen now, we must be present now, but we must make a vow to change the world in which we live for better.
As we enter Shabbat, make a fervent prayer for a better world, a world of peace, and a world free from those full of evil intent.
Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay
Today, with a Melton class, and Rabbi Moshe Rudin, the JCC of LBI and Congegation Adath Shalom, lowered the Flag to half-mast to share the grief of the Parkland, Florida community and the grief of a nation. We said Kaddish in memory of
Alyssa Miriam Alhadeff, Granddaughter of
JCC congregants David and Terri Robinovitz and all have lost their lives in this senseless tragedy.
May we see the end of violence and evil in our day and may we take affirmative steps to make it so.
T
RAVEL TO ISRAEL WITH THE JCC OF LBI
The JCC trip to Israel will take place October 7-18, 2018. The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Massada, to many museums, and more. At Massada we will be sharing in a bar mitzvah of one of our fellow travelers. What joy!
The JCC's first trip to Israel will take place October 7-18, 2018. The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Masada, to many museums, and more. At Masada we will be sharing in a bat mitzvah of one of our fellow travelers.
We will be immersed in Israeli history and culture and, at the same time, we will get to better know our selves, and each other.
So far an extraordinarily nice group of people have chosen to travel with us.
This trip that has been designed both for the person who has never been to Israel, and for the person who has visited frequently. Come be a part of what is sure to be a trip of a lifetime.
In addition to a set itinerary, we will have some evenings where we will be free to explore on our own. We will be provided with information on concerts or cultural events in the places where we will be.
The tour is officially flying El Al; however, if you want to fly United, ITC can help you to make arrangements.
For additional information, call Rabbi Jay at 973-865-9534 or email him at [email protected]
