SHABBAT ACROSS AMERICA & CANADA
March 3, 2017
On Friday night, March 3, 2017, hundreds of synagogues across the continent will take part in an historic national Jewish event to celebrate what unifies all Jews - Shabbat! By participating in this continent wide event, you will not only have the opportunity to experience Shabbat, but you will be sharing your experience with tens of thousands of Jews.
The JCC of LBI will be hosting a Shabbat Dinner that evening - but maybe not the usual menu. We will be serving a Chinese menu, one of the favorite foods of the Jewish people, kosher of course, followed by services led by Rabbi Jay.
Dinner is at 6:30 PM. $25 per person. Children $10. Contact the JCC office 609-492-4090 to make your reservation. Please let us know if you will be joining us by next Tuesday Feb 28th.
Sorry for the last minute notice.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
It is the end of February and do you know what that means? It's time to start thinking about Passover. Yes, you read correctly, "Passover". This is Shabbat Shekalim which is the first in a series of four special Shabbatot from now until Passover. There are two-such special Shabbatot before Purim and two before Passover. Aside from the special meaning of each special Shabbat, they collectively serve to remind us that our tradition does not want us to simply mark the date of our holidays on our calendars. Rather, we are provided with continuous early reminders of what is coming. An effective celebration of each holiday becomes exponentially more possible if we prepare in advance.
So, what is special about this Shabbat? It is called Shabbat Shekalim. It is observed on the Shabbat immediately before the beginning of the Month of Adar. Two Torahs will be taken out. From the first Torah scroll will be read the weekly Torah portion, Mishpatim. From the second Torah will be read a portion from the Book of Exodus that requires each male over 20 years of age to donate a half shekel to the Temple in Jerusalem before the month of Nisan. This donated sum was to be used to pay for sacrifices that were made on behalf of the community.
After the Temple was destroyed, it became customary to donate money on Purim. For this reason, many congregations have a tradition of passing around a basket for donations on Purim.
It is time to start thinking about our upcoming holidays. Purim begins on the evening of Saturday, March 11, 2017. On that evening we will have a special celebration with costumes, food, and special Megillah reading. Several people are chanting the Megillah. If you want to chant as well, it is not too late. Simply reach out to me and let me know of your interest.
Passover begins with the first Seder on Monday evening, April 10, 2017. Our wonderful community Seder will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2017.
This year we are having a great program on Sunday April 2, 2017. Dr. Murray Spiegel will be joining us at 9:30 AM with a
fascinating, humorous and educational multimedia presentation that covers a wide variety of topics: the history of the Seder, origins of its customs, creative and educational ways to use the Four Questions, novel approaches and different themes for your Seder. This program will help you to make an unforgettable Seder. Having learned from Dr. Spiegel before, I can assure you that this will be a program that you will not want to miss.
Join us for Shabbat Shekalim. Mark your calendar for Purim. Participate in our pre-Passover program. And join us for the community Seder and Passover services. One way to create lasting family and community memories is to plan for them in advance.
Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay
|
Rabbi Jay will be attending the Rabbinical Assembly Convention in Baltimore from Sunday - Wednesday this week and will not be available for Tuesday office hours.
The convention gives Rabbis an opportunity to learn and spend quality time with their colleagues.
Rabbi Jay will be at the JCC on Tuesdays and will have office hours from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. Drop in to chat (call the office to make sure he is in and not out on an emergency 609-492-4090) or make an appointment with him (973-865-9534).
This is also a good time to telephone the rabbi.

The Ladies Annual Florida Reunion
Thanks to Jackie Avondoglio for organizing the
annual Florida Reunion.
NEWS FROM THE REUNION
When the gals got to the restaurant, the manager was anxiously waiting for them outside the door. It seems that that there was a gas main problem and no way to cook anything in the kitchen. However, the restaurant has a brick pizza oven. So he suggested personal pizzas for everyone, salad and gelato. Everyone was happy with the new menu and enjoyed a wonderful lunch with their special JCC friends.

MAH JONGG
Mah Jongg Luncheon for Monday, February 27 at 11:30 at Brazzi's on Route 72. Here's the details:
DATE: Monday, February 27, 2017
TIME: 11:30 a.m.
PLACE: Brazzi Wood Fired Trattoria
601 Route 72
DETAILS: We will order off the menu and get separate checks.
As usual, I will collect an extra $1.00 from each of you as an extra tip for the waitresses. Also note that the way Brazzi's set up for us is that they'll reserve the tables of four for us to play, and then we'll all sit together to have lunch about an hour in to our playing. It's really very pleasant and they are very accommodating.
Please RSVP only if you are attending. It is, however, important that you let me know you are attending so I can give Brazzi's a headcount. As always, I can be reached by a reply to this email or my phone number is 212-249-6292.

MORRIS L. SHAPIRO ENDOWMENT FUND
All organizations should have a substantial endowment fund to ensure its continuation. Except for dire emergencies, the principal amounts in the fund cannot be used to run the organization. Interest earned from the account may be used. As previously announced, Herb and Selma Shapiro have created a JCC Endowment Fund to honor Herb's father. It will be known as "The Morris L. Shapiro Endowment Fund at the JCC of LBI " The Shapiros have generously pledged a total of $50,000 to fund this. While initially established by the Shapiros, anyone may contribute to this important fund.
Join Herb and Selma in helping assure the continuity of our JCC, and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this Fund.
Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
