A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JAY
|
As many of you know, this past week I had the privilege of joining several members of our congregation in Washington for the AIPAC (America Israel Public Affairs Committee) Policy Conference. The conference is an intimate gathering of 18,000 supporters of Israel. Initially one might query whether "intimate" is the correct adjective. Indeed, though the 18,000 people are from different states, different countries, and different religions, the large swath is made intimate by the uniform goal of love for, and speaking out on behalf of, our Jewish Homeland.
Jews working toward a common goal is as ancient as our Texts. In this week's Torah portion, Vayakhel-Pekudei, the Torah reports that every person was, in one way or another, involved in the construction of the Mishkan, the portable Tabernacle that was God's dwelling place as the Israelites wandered through the desert.
This year's conference featured many wonderful seminars and speakers. Imagine in one evening seeing Senator Chuck Schumer, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, and Vice President Pence. And then, the very next morning, hearing from Senator Robert Menendez, Senator Mitch McConnell, Senator Marco Rubio, and Prime Minister Marco Rubio. Then, imagine seeing a cross-section of Israeli culture, from journalists, to high Tech heroes, to educators, to generals. Then imagine an intimate conversation about protest and change between Natan Sharansky and his daughter. Then imagine a lunchroom filled with over 1000 Rabbis from all Jewish denominations who are listening to a discussion about Israel's shifting religious landscape. And imagine doing all of this while together with folks who, like you, care deeply about Israel and the Jewish people.
This year AIPAC set forth three prime lobbying Agendas.
First, the need to make sure that Security Assistance for the State of Israel continues unabated in order for our Homeland to be able to maintain its qualitative military edge over Israel's many enemies.
Second, the need to continuously oppose Iranian Aggression and Nuclear ambitions. Despite the agreement entered into between Iran and the US and its allies, Iran has continued to work openly on ballistic missile projects and shows no sign of halting its support of global terrorism.
Third, Vigorously oppose Boycotts of Israel. The concerted effort by Israel's enemies and anti-Semitic regimes to convince universities and municipalities is growing every day. We can help to put an end to this by ensuring passage of the Israel Anti-Boycott Act.
As in past years, this year, several JCC members were in Washington. AIPAC would like to see congregations bringing more congregants to Policy conference. In order to promote this, AIPAC has offered a block of 5 spots to the JCC (and other congregations) at a discounted rate of $399.00. The normal rate is $599.00. The JCC has until April 13th, 2018 to take advantage of this discount. If you have been thinking of joining me at Policy Conference, next year from March 24-26, 2019 would be a great year to do it.

The JCC's first trip to Israel will take place October 7-18, 2018. The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Masada, to many museums, and more. At Masada we will be sharing in a bat mitzvah of one of our fellow travelers.
We will be immersed in Israeli history and culture and, at the same time, we will get to better know our selves, and each other.
So far an extraordinarily nice group of people have chosen to travel with us.
This trip that has been designed both for the person who has never been to Israel, and for the person who has visited frequently. Come be a part of what is sure to be a trip of a lifetime.
In addition to a set itinerary, we will have some evenings where we will be free to explore on our own. We will be provided with information on concerts or cultural events in the places where we
will be.
The tour is officially flying El Al; however, if you want to fly United, ITC can help you to make arrangements.

Shabbat Parah
On the Shabbat after Purim, two Torah Scrolls are removed from the Ark. The Sidrah of the week is read from the first, and from the second, the chapter of Parah Adumah, the Red Cow (or Red Heifer), is read.
The reading of this chapter was instituted for this time of the year because Jews were required to purify themselves before coming to Jerusalem for the pilgrimage festival of Passover.
