A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

This week’s Torah portion, Beha’Alotecha, opens with Aaron being told to light the seven lamps of the Menorah with the lamps facing toward the “face” of the Menorah. But why is Aaron given this odd instruction? As often is the case with Torah, there are many reasons given.

One meaning that I have learned is that there are seven branches on the Menorah, one center stem and three branches on either side. God’s instruction means that each of the three candles to the left of the center stem must face that center stem. Likewise, each of the three candles to the right of the center stem must face that center stem.

The explanation continues that the three to the left are three days of the week, and the three to the right are three days of the week. The center stem Is Shabbat. Since Shabbat is the day to be sanctified, each of the “weekday” candles faces, and illuminates, the center “Shabbat” candle.

Each day would then appear to be subservient to Shabbat, but there is a different meaning. What is really happening is that each day of the week has a light of its own (including Shabbat). However, by facing toward the Shabbat candle, the six other candles are increasing the light of Shabbat. Once the Shabbat candle is brighter, it then increases its glow over the other six candles, and the rest of the world.

As such, God’s plan is that there is a synergy between Shabbat and the rest of the week. Shabbat brightens our week; the rest of the week brightens Shabbat. Together they all create a light that brightens the world.

Our lives have grown increasingly complicated. Sometimes it is nice to simplify it just a bit. All week place some of your positive energy toward Shabbat. In so doing, Shabbat will have that much more energy to give you when it comes.  And together you will have more energy to work on making the world a better place.

We give to Shabbat and Shabbat gives to us.
A day of rest made more sublime by the rest of the days.

Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

THE WEEK THAT WAS...

It was a very special Shabbat Dinner last Friday evening. Close to 40 households gathered together via Zoom to light candles, recite the blessing over the wine and say the motzi. We then went into separate "dining rooms" to eat and chat with old and new friends. The evening concluded with Kabbalat Services.

We are planning another Shabbat Dinner for July 10th. Please let us know if you will be attending by July 3rd by contacting Irene Babst at jccoflbiauxiliary@gmail.com.
