will share insights from her book:
"Last Girl Before the Freeway:
The Life, Loves, Losses,
and Liberation of Joan Rivers."
A juicy, intimate biography of one of the greatest comedians ever—a performer whose sixty year career was borne, simply, out of a desire to make people laugh so she could feel loved—LAST GIRL BEFORE FREEWAY delves into the inner workings of a woman who
both reflected and redefined the world around her.

Bestselling author Marie Benedict reveals the story of a brilliant woman scientist only remembered for her beauty.
Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side and understood more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.
But she kept a secret more shocking than her heritage or her marriage: she was a scientist. And she had an idea that might help the country fight the Nazis and revolutionize modern communication...if anyone would listen to her.
A powerful book based on the incredible true story of the glamour icon and scientist, The Only Woman in the Room is a masterpiece that celebrates the many women in science that history has overlooked.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
In this week’s Torah portion, Parashat Va-Etchannan, Moses says the following:
The Lord our God made a covenant with us at (Sinai). It was not with our fathers that the Lord made this covenant, but with us, the living, every one of us who is here today.
The message is that God was not just connected to our ancestors, but with us, the present generation, as well. It is a clarion call that says that every “present” generation is connected to God.
In the context of the Torah narrative the never-ending nature of our covenant with God is an important piece of the Jewish puzzle. It means that the obligations impressed upon our great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents are our obligations as well.
It is not by accident that Moses makes this proclamation just before he recites the Ten Commandments. He is literally saying that the laws and ideas of the Torah apply to every one and every generation. It is a reminder that 1) recognizing God, 2) not making idols, 3) not taking God’s name in vain, 4) observing Shabbat, 5) Honoring parents, 6) not murdering, 7) not committing adultery, 8) not stealing, 9) not testifying falsely, and 10) not coveting, are all rules that are intended to apply to us as much as they applied to our ancestors.
It is not by accident that the Shema also closely follows Moses’ cross-generational proclamation. The Shema reaffirms that each of us acknowledges God’s oneness. It also requires us to teach the laws to our children. By teaching the laws to our children, we ensure that, in fact, the covenant continues from generation to generation.
Why is this important? Because our ancestors received the Torah in order to make the world a better place. That goal has been impressed upon every succeeding generation, and we should not lose sight of it.
While there is no universal agreement on what will make the world a better place, our parents, we, our children, and our children’s children, have all been impressed with the task of working to achieve this goal.
The covenant stretches all the way back to Sinai. It guided our ancestors, it guides us, and it will guide our children and their children. May the present generation be the one to make the world as good as it can be and may God and our ancestors have reason to smile down on them.
Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Last week's inaugural program of Susan & Friends Summer Series brought the delightful Jamie Brenner to LBI via Zoom.
Jamie novels are always set in a beach community. We hope she will chose LBI for one of her future stories.
Here is a note from our guest author:
Hi everyone:
I want to thank you for hosting such a wonderful discussion last night. Your congregation members are so engaged -- it was truly lovely. I wish you the best with this series. I think you'll have a fantastic evening with Leslie Bennetts. I saw her in person at Barnes & Noble when her Joan Rivers biography published and she was fascinating. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy rest of the summer. I hope very much to be able to meet in person next summer.
All my best -
Jamie
