HIGH HOLIDAY INFORMATION
The High Holidays are just 5 weeks away!!!!

Our High Holiday Information Booklet is available on our website for members and friends. It includes an introductory letter, dates and times of services, ticket information and an order form. See the web site for all the information: HIGH HOLIDAYS

Each Tuesday we will be sending out an update on our plans leading up to the Days of Awe as well as instruction on how to navigate Zoom and Streaming. Our first issue, which was just sent out, includes information on how you can order a prayer book (Mahzor) . If you missed Issue 1, here it is: HH UPDATE

A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
basicImage
The Month of Elul starts next Friday. It begins the countdown to the High Holy Days. The Rabbis envisioned that the month of Elul would be used to prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Because the pandemic has shifted us out of our normal routines, this year, preparation is more important than ever.

The above having been said, I am very excited about our plans for High Holy Day services. Zoom gives us an ability to be intimate in a unique way. Each of you will have a front row seat to the service. There will be an opportunity for interaction that cannot be provided during a “normal” service. I am certain that you will love Cantor Geller.

Because services will be virtual, they will be different from what we have experienced in the past. This is why I am providing programming designed to help all of us get ready for this year’s holidays.

Starting next Friday morning, the first of Elul, we will be having a daily morning service. At the end of every morning service we will be blowing the Shofar. It is a mitzvah to hear the Shofar whenever it is blown.

I will also have classes designed to help us become familiar with the themes of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We will also take a look at specific prayers and poems that are contained in the services.

I will be providing a daily word designed to help us to think about the issues that confront us as we consider making positive changes for the year to come.

Be sure to look for future emails from me outlining the next month in more detail!

For starters, take a look at “This is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared”, by Rabbi Alan Lew. Rabbi Lew outlines the issues presented by the Holy Days in a way that is both understandable and motivating. You can get a hard copy or you can get it for your kindle. I will have a number of classes that will focus on this book.
It is my hope that by the time you join Cantor Sara Geller and me for our High Holy Days Zoom services, we will all feel prepared to use the Holy Days to strip away any negativity from 5780 and create a positive beginning to 5781.

As always, I am continually available by email, text, phone, or Zoom, to discuss your thoughts and ideas.

Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

SUSAN (SHAPIRO) & FRIENDS SUMMER SERIES

Our inaugural program of Susan & Friends Summer Series brought the delightful Jamie Brenner to LBI via Zoom. Jamie novels are always set in a beach community. We hope she will chose LBI for one of her future stories.

Our second program of the series featured veteran
journalist, Leslie Bennetts, who gave us quite an insight into the life of Joan Rivers.
If you haven't read her book, put it on your list:
"Last Girl Before the Freeway: The Life, Loves, Losses, and Liberation of Joan Rivers." .

OUR FINAL PROGRAM IN THE SERIES

Thursday, August 27 @7:45 PM

THE WEEK THAT WAS......

Our first Zoom Annual Meeting was well attended.
Various chairpersons gave their reports and there was a feeling that we are doing well in spite of the pandemic. A recording of the meeting will be made available on the web site shortly.

Thursday night was quite a treat as long time JCC member and local developer, Herb Shapiro, took us with him on his journey from Elizabeth to LBI. It was a very special evening.
