A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
We are now in the Month of Elul which marks the commencement of the countdown to Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. This means that it is time to start doing the Teshuvah we hear so much about. It is a time to return (to our better selves or to a happier place, or to our “home). It is a time to return to God. It is a time to be contemplative of our selves. And yes, it is a time to think about repentance for the negative things we might have done.

This year it just seems that we all need to put a lot of energy into this self-accounting. In Hebrew we call it Cheshbon Ha-Nefesh, an “accounting of the soul”.

It is said that Elul is an acronym with each of its four Hebrew letters (Aleph-Lamed-Vav-Lamed) standing for a separate word. Commentators have come up with at least 5 different acronyms. The most appropriate for this year would seem to be: “Ish Lerei’eihu Umatanot La’evyonim”, “…(each) man to his fellow and gifts to the poor”. This is a portion of a verse from the Book of Esther (9:22) which speaks about a month that turned from sorrow to joy; from mourning to feasting; and of sending delicacies to one another and gifts to the poor. Elul is therefore expressed as a month of love and a month of bonding between people through acts of kindness. But it is also a month of healing.

In this time of Covid and political and social upheaval, we could doubly use a month of healing.

With this in mind, I am providing what I am calling a “TEEYUL THROUGH ELUL CALENDAR”. (The Hebrew word “Teeyul” means to walk or to stroll) (For instance, it is common to take a Teeyul on Shabbat, A Shabbat walk).

The calendar covers the 29 days of Elul, which begins Friday, August 21st. When you look at it you will see that every day provides a word in all capital letters. The words come from a blog by Rabbi Phyllis A. Sommer. Each word is designed to make you think. Write down what the word evokes in you; find a poem about the word; how can the word help you to prepare for the High Holy Days. Though there is a word on the calendar for each day of Elul, don’t feel as if you need to do this every day. Go at your own pace and have reflective fun with it.

Each day on the Calendar also has a prompt for something that you might do on that day as you do your self-accounting. The original version is from the Stephen Wise Temple in Los Angeles. It posted on a Face Book page for Rabbis preparing for the High Holy Days, by Rabbi Sari Laufer.

Again, you don’t have to do the exercise for everyday, but if you look at the Calendar, I am certain you will find a prompt that interests you. Have fun!!! SEE THE LINK TO THE CALENDAR BELOW.

There is one last thing that requires your input!!!!  Please read the following carefully because it is Time sensitive!!!

We would love to see and hear from you! The JCC, with the help of inimitable and talented Sophie Braun, is creating a “Welcome to the JCC's High Holy Day” video and we need your help. Here is all you need to do:

1) Create a video on your phone or your laptop that you can send to the JCC. (Please note that if you are using your phone, it is best if the phone is held horizontally.)
2) The video needs to be 10 or 15 seconds long.
3) We would like you to send either:
a) A New Year’s Message;
b) A message about what you are looking forward to in the New Year; or
c) A message about what you wish for the New Year.
4) Once you create your video, send it to me at Mjayrab@gmail.com. Be sure to include the names of everyone on the video.
HERE IS THE TIME SENSITIVE PART:
5) Please do this by next Friday, August 28th. I know this is short notice, but I also know that if you can set aside the time to do this brief exercise, you will not only have fun, but you will love to see yourselves the finished product. And everyone will love to see you!!!
6) If you have any questions, please call or email me.

Membership

We are actively trying to increase our number of paid memberships in our organization. As we all realize, this is not a “normal” world that we are living in and many of the activities we would love to participate in, aren’t happening. Therefore, the Executive Committee of the Women’s Auxiliary have decided to extend this membership of 2019-2020 through 2021, therefore, if you have paid to join or to those who are still deciding to join, your membership fee will include next year’s membership.
All paid members are going to be receiving an invitation to a Zoom Luncheon scheduled for Wednesday, September 30th at 12:00 PM. Prepare a salad, sandwich or maybe just a cocktail lol (it is past 5:00 PM somewhere), greet, meet and lets gab while we enjoy an hour of friendship and camaraderie and hopefully make plans for our future activities.
Please join now!

Mystic Meat and Seafood in Ship Bottom will give the Women's Auxiliary at 5% donation on any individual orders. Orders can be placed with Renee and Phil. Let them know this order is to be recorded in the donation book for the JCC of LBI. Orders are curbside pick up only. Make your request over the phone with a credit card: 609-324-1194.

The High Holidays are coming! Our JCC is busy planning a very full calendar of classes during the month of Elul and a very meaningful high holiday zoom experience for all of us. The change of day and time for our book group is for September only. Wishing you and yours a very happy, healthy Jewish New Year. May we all be inscribed and sealed in the Book of Life.

The #1 International Best Seller, The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem is a dazzling novel of mothers and daughters, stories told and untold, and the ties that bind four generations of women.
Gabriela's mother Luna is the most beautiful woman in all of Jerusalem, though her famed beauty and charm seem to be reserved for everyone but her daughter. Ever since Gabriela can remember, she and Luna have struggled to connect. But when tragedy strikes, Gabriela senses there's more to her mother than painted nails and lips.

Here are the 18 participants in Monday's WAX Book Discussion Group led skillfully by Sheri Horowitz Jay. The book "The Only Woman in the Room" provided a backdrop to discuss pre-war Austria as well as the amazing story of Hedwig Kiesler aka Hedy Lamarr. Hedy was not only a glamorous movie star but also an inventor and scientist.
