THREE STRIKES AND YOU’RE OUT…..OF EGYPT
(Originally published in 2012/5773)
Our tradition seems to love couching things in triplicates. It is a tradition that gives us “Kohens, Levites, and Yisrael’s”; it is a tradition that gives us “Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh”; it is a tradition that gives us three matzoth stacked on the Seder table. This three-in-a-row pattern could have no meaning, or it could have several meanings. I have taught that one of the purposes of this tradition could be to tell us that every moment is comprised of the “past, present, and future”.
Torah’s love of connecting past, present, and future is beautifully illustrated in Parashat Beshallach. At the beginning of the Parasha we are told that as the Israelites were leaving Egypt, Moshe took Joseph’s bones with him. Joseph represents the past and the promise of a future and Moshe has a keen sense of the importance of this.
Near the end of the Parasha, Moshe speaks to Joshua and tells him to choose some men to do battle with Amalek. Indeed, this is the first time that Joshua is mentioned in the Torah. As we all know, Joshua will ultimately be appointed Moshe’s successor and he will lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. Joshua represents the future.
Everything in between the point where Moshe retrieves Joseph’s bones, in the beginning, and where Joshua is mentioned in the end, the vast narrative of the Parasha, represents the present.
The present is the fulcrum that balances the past with the future. Joseph’s bones don’t need to be retrieved in order to leave Egypt. God does not command it, and yet Moshe feels compelled to disinter Joseph’s bones and bring the past with him; to sanctify it. Joshua does not need to be named as the field General, and yet he is pointed out. He is pointed out because the future, and knowing that there is a future, is important. The Rabbis, too, understood the need to connect past, present, and future. Just look at the Amidah. Its content runs from an acknowledgement of our past as exhibited in the first paragraph by mentioning the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, to requests for a future redemption. Much of the rest of the Amidah deals with issues of the day.
Everything that we do today is infused with the past just as it will have an impact on our future. Tradition meets continuity in the present. This is Torah’s lesson. Amen. Amen. Amen.

LET'S TALK MOVIES WITH ROSE
Tuesday, February 6th
10:00 AM
Last week I saw two movies that I was dying to discuss with someone. Who better to do that with than our JCC family!!!!
The two movies I chose to discuss are: "Someplace in Queens" and
"May December"
They both deal with relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children. "Someplace in Queens" stars Ray Romano who tries to live his seemingly sad life through his son. It is streaming on Hulu and can be rented on Prime Video (worth the $5.99). On Netflix you can view "May December", a film about a married couple facing pressure when an actress comes to do research for a film about their past and starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore.
Please see both films and we will get together on Zoom to unpack it all.

This presentation will include both historical and current stories about the Curaçao Jewish community and practices. Curaçao will also be introduced for those who may not be familiar with my home country. There will be several photographs to show aspects of Curaçao, the synagogue and Jewish heritage sites. Ronald Gomes Casseres descends from Sephardic Jews who came to Curaçao in 1690. He was born on the Dutch Caribbean island where he is a leader of the historic Mikvé Israel-Emanuel community. Now retired from a long commercial banking career, one of his interests is the history of his Jewish community and its practices and has published on this in local and international media. He has been active in numerous organizations and institutions in Curaçao. He was awarded a Royal decoration by the Kingdom of the Netherlands for social and cultural contributions to the Curaçao community.

All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation.
