This week I will first give an update on last week’s wonderful Shabbat and then I will continue with a message about the liturgy.
Last Shabbat we had our first “Cholentfest” in 3 years. The fun began earlier in the week as I purchased all of the ingredients necessary. The recipe includes: 9 pounds of Flanken, sausage, assorted beans (lima, red kidney, navy, northern), barley, onions, potatoes, Coca-Cola, ketchup, chicken stock, kishka, and various secret spices.
Early in the afternoon on Friday, I met Joyce Levine in the JCC kitchen and we began to prepare the ingredients. I used three 8.5 quart crockpots for the meat cholent. Joyce made one crockpot with the vegetarian cholent. Everything was prepped and the crockpots were turned on before Shabbat, at around 3:00 pm. They stayed on until we served lunch at about 11:45 on Saturday morning. Honestly, the JCC was smelling delicious!
A crew from WAX, including Irene Babst, Noralyn Carroll, Suzy Geier, Bonni Faich, and Arlene Schragger, baked plenty of homemade cookies, brownies, and Kamish bread for dessert. Dessert was rounded out with Chocolate and pistachio Halva.
As always, the JCC’s kitchen crew, Susan and Debbie, made sure everything was set up perfectly.
25-30 people joined us. We ate, schmoozed, sang Birkat Hamazon, and then many stayed all day to play Mah Jongg. Please join us on February 25th for our second “Cholentfest”!
AND NOW ON BACK TO OUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED SHABBAT MESSAGE ABOUT THE LITURGY:
Let’s continue to look at Birkhot Ha-Shachar(The Morning Blessings). You may recall that last week we discussed a series of personal prayers thanking God for various things in our life. The next part of this service switches gears slightly. Instead of thanking God, we are now focusing on making requests of God. Look at the requests and notice that they are all made on behalf of the community:
May we feel at home with Your Torah and cling to the Mitzvot.
Keep us from: Error, sin, transgression, trial and disgrace.
Don’t let the evil impulse control us.
Keep us from wicked people and corrupt companions.
The prayer continues:
Strengthen our desire to do good deeds; teach us humility, that we may serve You. May we find grace, love, and compassion in Your sight and in the sight of all who look upon us, this day and every day. Grant us a full measure of lovingkindness.
At first glance, the liturgy is recognizing that our days are lived in partnership with God. But if you look closer, you will notice that each of the items listed are actually things that we inherently have control over. We do not need God, nor are not asking for God, to pull a lever to make these things happen. Each morning when we pray, what we are really doing, is making ourselves mindful of how to live our best lives. God is present when we push our divine selves forward.
Do you have thoughts about any of this? Questions in general? Email me at Mjayrab@gmail.com.
Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

SATURDAY AT THE JCC OF LBI. Last Saturday the JCC was bustling with activity. Following services, a Cholent Kiddish Lunch was enjoyed. Cholent (both vegetarian and meat), salad, home made cookies and halavah were on the menu. Thank you to Joyce Levine and Rabbi Jay for the delicious cholent and the WAX for baking cookies in our kitchen. All afternoon, the clicking of tiles could be heard as members played mah jongg. Many folks had dinner at the Bayside Diner across from the Center. Thank you to Christine at the diner for extending a discount for all the ticket holders. That evening a most interesting film was shown in partnership with the Lighthouse International Film Society, completing a full and exciting day at the JCC. Thanks to Christie Rooney of the LIFS for bringing this film to our facility and to our technology team of Cliff Denker and Howard Babbitt for making sure the film ran smoothly.

House on Endless Waters by Emuna Elon
February 8, 2023 CHANGE OF DATE
At the behest of his agent, renowned author Yoel Blum reluctantly agrees to visit his birthplace of Amsterdam to meet with his Dutch publisher, despite promising his late mother that he would never return to that city. While touring the Jewish Museum with his wife, Yoel stumbles upon a looping reel of photos offering a glimpse of pre-war Dutch Jewish life, and is astonished to see the youthful face of his beloved mother staring back at him, posing with her husband, Yoel’s older sister, Nettie…and an infant he doesn’t recognize.
This unsettling discovery launches him into a fervent search for the truth, revealing Amsterdam’s dark wartime history and the underground networks which hid Jewish children away from danger—but at a cost. The deeper into the past Yoel digs, the better he understands his mother’s silence, and the more urgent the question that has unconsciously haunted him for a lifetime—Who am I?—becomes. Evocative, insightful, and deeply resonant, House on Endless Waters beautifully illustrates the complex nature of identity and belonging, and the inextricability of past and present.
