A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
Well, the Holidays are behind us and we might be able to take a rest if we were not scheduled to have a number of classes beginning this year.

First: Join me on Monday mornings at 10:00 starting October 11th. This is a Hartman institute Seminar called: Foundations for a Thoughtful Judaism. The first Unit is:

PEOPLEHOOD:
Explores questions related to the collective experience of Jewish life: What does it mean to be part of the Jewish community? To what extent can communities hold diverse and shared values at the same time? What does Jewish Peoplehood mean today, when the centers of Jewish life, North America and Israel, are so different and independent from one another?
The other Units are: Faith, Practice and Ethics. Each of these units is self-contained.
Second: I am starting a new class on Wednesday evenings beginning October 6th, right after Minyan (About 7:45).This will be a Weekly Torah study class using the book: Judaism’s Life-Changing Ideas by, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. We will study each week’s Torah Portion using Rabbi Sacks’ book as a starting point. The book is awesome and it will lead to great discussion. Here is a pdf of the Life Changing Idea presented in the first Torah portion of the year, Bereishit. BEREISHIT

Third: Join me for Torah Study on Thursday mornings beginning Thursday October 7th at 11:00. This class is a discussion of the weekly Torah portion.  While we use commentaries, old and new, much of this class revolves around the participants’ thoughts on the Torah portion.

Hope you can join me.

Shabbat Shalom,
Michael S. Jay
Rabbi Jay is taking a well deserved Shabbat with family this week. Thank you to Ira Morgenthal and Stu Lehrer for leading services on Friday night and Saturday morning. Zach Lombardi will be reading Torah and Rose Valentine will give a D'var Torah.

Eternal by Lisa Scottoline
Lisa Scottoline offers a sweeping and shattering epic of historical fiction fueled by shocking true events, the tale of a love triangle that unfolds in the heart of Rome…in the creeping shadow of fascism. Unfolding over decades, Eternal is a tale of loyalty and loss, family and food, love and war– all set in one of the world’s most beautiful cities at its darkest moment. This moving novel will be forever etched in the hearts and minds of readers.

ENDOWMENT FUND - NEW INFORMATION !!!!!!!

Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio. Judith z”l & Donald Pripstein joined the Shapiros and established The Pripstein Family Endowment Fund.

As recently reported, Don Pripstein pledged another $50,000 to establish The Judith & Donald Pripstein Endowment Fund.

As a result of Don’s letter, Harold Farin has stepped forward and has established “The Farin Family Endowment Fund”. This Fund will join with the three others as part of the JCC Endowment Fund portfolio. Other members are encouraged to also provide for the future of our JCC by establishing similar funds.

A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
