A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
Parashat Noah ends by telling us that Terah, Abraham’s father, took his family on a journey from Ur of the Chaldeans to Canaan. However, they did not make it to Canaan, instead, for reasons unknown, they stopped and settled in Haran.

While we don’t know why Terah stopped his journey, we do know that his son, at God’s urging, completed that journey and went to Canaan. Why is this important? As soon as Abraham agreed to go to Canaan, he was not only doing God’s bidding, but he was also finishing his father’s goal. Terah must have been very proud of his son, but he must have also relished the fact that the task he had begun was completed.

However, Abraham’s accomplishment goes beyond connecting with God and finishing what his father had begun. Rather, Abraham went an additional step. He did not go to Canaan with only his family. As the Text tells us, among other things, Abraham took the persons (or souls) that he and Sarah had acquired while they were in Haran. At least one source in our tradition tells us that these persons or souls were the people whom Abraham and Sarah had converted, but it may also have been a reference to “workers,” or “slaves”, or “friends”.

It is the fact that Abraham took these “others” on the journey that resonates with me.  It is clear that Abraham took something that might have remained very personal, and created a community. He is recognizing that it is wonderful to have a relationship with the KBH (Kadosh Baruch Hu)(God), but that it is equally important to create and continue communal connection to God and to our Tradition.

Connecting community is one of the things that the JCC has always done well and, God willing, will continue to do even better in the future. As an example, we welcome people in and ask them (politely) to join our journey at services or events.  We had a beautiful Shabbaton this past Shabbat with our friends from Congregation Agudath Israel of West Essex New Jersey. Over the course of the entire weekend, we prayed, sang, learned, ate, and walked together. This kind of intensely comfortable bonding time cannot be replicated in many places other than our little peace of heaven.

We are each on a unique and personal journey. The Jewish part of the journey, while personal, is strengthened when we invite others to join us. This is why each of us in the JCC community should feel free to invite others to be a part of our communal journey. This was part of Abraham’s genius; he recognized that if he shared something wonderful, he could continue to expand its positive impact.

Even as fall begins to tighten its firm grip on the world around us, don’t hesitate to continue inviting folks to journey to Exit 63 and to proceed to the JCC. As this occurs we would be continuing the holy work that Abraham began thousands of years ago; the journey is not ours to take alone.

Eternal by Lisa Scottoline
Lisa Scottoline offers a sweeping and shattering epic of historical fiction fueled by shocking true events, the tale of a love triangle that unfolds in the heart of Rome…in the creeping shadow of fascism. Unfolding over decades, Eternal is a tale of loyalty and loss, family and food, love and war– all set in one of the world’s most beautiful cities at its darkest moment. This moving novel will be forever etched in the hearts and minds of readers.

In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. ENDOWMENT FUND - NEW INFORMATION !!!!!!!

Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio. Judith z”l & Donald Pripstein joined the Shapiros and established The Pripstein Family Endowment Fund.

As recently reported, Don Pripstein pledged another $50,000 to establish The Judith & Donald Pripstein Endowment Fund.

As a result of Don’s letter, Harold Farin has stepped forward and has established “The Farin Family Endowment Fund”. This Fund will join with the three others as part of the JCC Endowment Fund portfolio. Other members are encouraged to also provide for the future of our JCC by establishing similar funds.

A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
