A LAND OF SCREEMING SILENCE
In a foreign land where everything has frozen, one small piece of God’s land will remain,
for our children.
Nothing will freeze there, there will be no silence,
there, the sea will remain blue and the sand will not become a burning desert.
Only there and with them will we find words,
simple words,
of normality, routine.
We will talk gently,
to be precise.
We will ask and listen.
We will smile, hug.
As before the bane of humanity.
We will protect them
from the pain of the screaming silence,
from the loss for words.
A portion of a poem by Einat Nathan. She lives in Tel Aviv with her husband Yuval, and her five children Eyal, Yoav, Lihi, Rona, and Shira.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the drive to collect items for our Israeli soldiers. The response has been wonderful. Folks have dropped things off at the JCC, Temple B'nai Israel and had items delivered by Amazon directly to Toms River. Two SUV carloads were delivered to Temple B'nai Israel Thursday morning. Thank you to Irene & Michael Babst and Rose & Rudy Valentine for packing everything up and making the delivery

A SIDE STORY....
50 some odd years ago I met Penny Leifer. We were members of a fledgling B'nai Brith Women's chapter called Adedah, linking the towns of Hanover, Parsippany and Pinebrook. We kept in touch over the years, particularly when Penny moved to Manchester in South Jersey.
About 10 years ago while chatting on the phone, I mentioned to her that our Rabbi was ill and we were looking for Rabbis to temporarily fill in for him on various Shabbats in the summer. She mentioned her daughter had a friend who just finished seminary and was looking for a position. She gave me his number and he agreed to join us and lead services one weekend. His name: Michael S. Jay.
Fast forward to last week when Penny and I were chatting about the situation in Israel. She mentioned that her synagogue in Toms River was collecting items to be sent to help the soldiers in Israel. I asked if the JCC could also collect items to bring down to them for shipping. So now Penny and I are back together doing hands-on volunteering. It feels so good!

Ocean County Jewish Federation sets a goal of raising $150,000 to aid Israel | |
|
Since October 7th, if I am being honest with you my dear congregants, I have been numb. I have so much swirling in my head that I am having trouble writing. What message can I possibly give that will help you? Or that will help Israel? Or that will help the Jewish people? Or that will help me?
I have been numb, but I have not been idle. I have attended meeting after meeting. Sheri and I have made donation after donation. Along with many in the JCC community, I brought t-shirts, socks, sweatshirts, toothbrushes, thermal underwear, and non-perishable breakfast bars to B’nai Israel in Tom’s River, for shipment to Israel. And I watch the news, read articles, and listen to podcasts.
I check in with friends, relatives, and congregants. I text via WhatsApp with my relatives in Israel. And I watch the news, read articles, and listen to podcasts.
And when I am done watching the news, reading articles, and listening to podcasts, I watch more news, read more articles, and listen to more podcasts.
As Israel’s mission in Gaza continues and goes from days into weeks and into months, the media and much of the world, and even your friends, will speak of disproportionality and the plight of the non-combatant.
We are human and we are Jews. It is in our genes, and we have been taught, to care about the world, and the people in it. So, we naturally care about the plight of innocent Palestinians, as we should. Israel is, and will continue, to bend over backward (often to its detriment) to avoid harming civilians. This job and promise that Israel makes to itself, its people, God, and the world, is made harder when the “leaders” of the Palestinians have no interest in protecting their own people. But Israel will strive to keep its end of the bargain and will work tirelessly to save the lives of non-combatants and innocents.
Why? Because Israel is the nation of the Jewish people. It is the nation of the one God of heaven, who created us in God’s image. It is the nation that accepted God’s Torah, a book of laws, justice, and morality. In short, Israel values life.
The message I have is simple. People around you are going to try to get you off message. The media and, maybe your friends, will try to get you off message. But the message is simple, and we need to stick to it. Repeat the message 3 times:
THERE IS NO MORAL EQUIVALENCY AND ISRAEL HAS THE RIGHT TO PROTECT ITSELF.
THERE IS NO MORAL EQUIVALENCY AND ISRAEL HAS THE RIGHT TO PROTECT ITSELF.
THERE IS NO MORAL EQUIVALENCY AND ISRAEL HAS THE RIGHT TO PROTECT ITSELF.
But I have another message:
NEVER, EVER, STOP PRAYING FOR PEACE.
Oh, and one last message:
THANK GOD WE HAVE OUR JCC COMMUNITY TO PROVIDE COMFORT AND STRENGTH TO EACH OF US, ISRAEL, AND THE JEWISH PEOPLE.
Sent with love and concern.
Shabbat Shalom
Rabbi Michael S. Jay
And now for a brief Torah message. In Parashat Noah, this week’s Torah portion, God decides to destroy the earth because:
“The earth became corrupt before God;
the earth was filled with lawlessness.”
Now look at the Hebrew (I am not making this up):
וַתִּשָּׁחֵ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ לִפְנֵ֣י הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַתִּמָּלֵ֥א הָאָ֖רֶץ חָמָֽס׃
If Hebrew is not your first language here is the transliteration (look at the last word):
VahTishachait Ha-ahretz Lifnay Ha-Elohim vahtimahlay Ha-ahretz CHAMAS
Yes, you are reading this correctly, in Hebrew the word for “lawlessness” is “CHAMAS”. And it was because of Chamas that God destroyed the world. The Torah spoke to our ancestors 3,000 years ago, and it speaks to us today.

THE CHOREOGRAPHY OF THE SHABBAT MORNING SERVICE
Have you ever wondered why, how, when, where, and even what are the reasons and customs that create the make-up and rhythm of the Shabbat Morning Service? You may know the prayers, you may be familiar with the melodies, and you even be acquainted with the blocking, but now gain an insight into the explanations and sharing of the nuances that is the choreography of Shabbat
Stu W Lehrer will literally conduct the zoom class following the Sim Shalom Shabbat Siddur and the Etz Hayim Chumash that are the Sefarim [books] that we use to conduct our services - There will be profound instances discovered during our trek through the tefilot [prayers] as well as amusing anecdotes why certain practices are incorporated
This 2-part course will run on Thursday November 9 and again on Thursday November 16 immediately following our Ma'ariv Services which begin at 7:30 PM. Questions as well as shared memories are as always, highly welcomed

A number of people have expressed interest in creating a new beginners Hebrew class. The class would be open to all members interested in learning to read Hebrew and learn about our services, our holidays, Torah, and our history. No knowledge of Hebrew is required. The class would meet weekly for one hour on zoom. All class materials are supplied free of charge. There is no cost for the class itself. I need to find out the exact amount of interest and get suggested times for the class. Mondays and Thursdays are not available. If you are interested, please email me and include your contact information and availability. Ira Morgenthal @ inaira213@gmail.com
