The children of Israel are calling- Stand by me
The JCC is participating in the Blue Ribbons for Israel Campaign. Ribbons are available at the JCC.
Wearing the ribbon is a gesture of solidarity with the hostages and the people of Israel. The campaign's goal is to keep the hostages' plight in the public consciousness and maintain international support for their safe return.

Since Oslo, I have historically been in favor of a two-state solution. I did not support it because I believed that the land belonged to anyone other than the Jewish people. Rather, I saw it as the quickest way to achieve peace and to stop the murder of our people.
However, with each rejected peace deal, and with each corresponding intifada, and with the failure of a true peace partner to appear, two-states seems a less likely resolution.
Add to this the October 7th Shabbat/Simchat Torah pogrom/massacre, where Palestinians left their unoccupied land and tortured, raped, and murdered 1500 men, women, and children, most of them Jewish. This horrific event taken together with subsequent riots across the globe complete with chants of “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, and it has become patently clear that a two-state solution is not now really available.
Still, I know the Jewish people. We are a holy nation. What we want more than anything, what we pray for multiple times every day, is peace. So, even now, after years of murders, and rejections of peace, and even after the barbarity of October 7th, the Jewish people would still be willing to make peace with a legitimate peace partner.
Until then, we need to learn to advocate for ourselves. If the last two weeks have shown anything, it is that, even though we have many friends in the western democracies, still much of the world is not friendly to the Jewish people.
Since October 7th, the more I read articles, hear interviews, speak with people, the more it becomes clear that very few people are familiar with the history of Israel (both biblical and modern) and the Jewish people. I am working on obtaining a very thorough curriculum on the Israel/Palestinian conflict. While I am working on obtaining it, below is a reverse timeline of the modern state of Israel. I pulled it off a Facebook post and cannot properly attribute it. Once I find out its origin, I will let you know.
While history is to some always gray, this timeline does provide one good answer to those who, with evil intent, chant “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”. (We must make it clear to everyone that the meaning of this phrase is the eradication of Israel).
1) Before the modern state of Israel there was the British mandate, Not a Palestinian state.
2) Before the British mandate there was the Ottoman empire, Not a Palestinian state.
3) Before the ottoman empire there was the Islamic mamluk sultanate of Egypt, Not a Palestinian state.
4) Before the Islamic mamluk sultanate of Egypt there was the Ayyubid dynasty, Not a Palestinian state.
5) Before the Ayyubid dynasty there was the Christian kingdom of Jerusalem, Not a Palestinian state.
6) Before the Christian kingdom of Jerusalem there was the Fatimid caliphate, Not a Palestinian state.
7) Before the Fatimid caliphate there was the Byzantine empire, Not a Palestinian state.
8) Before the byzantine empire there was the Roman empire, Not a Palestinian state.
9) Before the Roman empire there was the Hasmonaean dynasty, Not a Palestinian state.
10) Before the Hasmonaean dynasty there was the Seleucid empire, Not a Palestinian state.
11) Before the Seleucid empire there was the empire of Alexander the 3rd of Macedon, Not a Palestinian state.
12) Before the empire of Alexander the 3rd of Macedon there was the Persian empire, Not a Palestinian state.
13) Before the Persian empire there was the Babylonian empire, Not a Palestinian state.
14) Before the Babylonian empire there was the kingdoms of Israel and Judea, Not a Palestinian state.
15) Before the kingdoms of Israel and Judea there was the kingdom of Israel, Not a Palestinian state.
16) Before the kingdom of Israel there was the theocracy of the 12 tribes of Israel, Not a Palestinian state.
17) Before the theocracy of the 12 tribes of Israel there was the individual state of Canaan, Not a Palestinian state.

Candle Lighting time
Friday evening
October 27, 2023
5:44 pm
Tonight, consider lighting an extra pair of candles.
Praying for comfort and peace,
Rabbi Paula Drill
Circle one with my hands: Dear God, help me find steadiness and peace within so that I can continue to nurture the flame of my own soul in these dark times. Help me to be a source of kindness and light for all those close to me.
Circle two: Dear God, accept these lights on behalf of the loyal women of Israel who yearn to light but cannot in these times of danger. Bring Your light to women held in captivity, serving in the IDF, working in hospitals, and living in dangerous areas.
Circle three: Dear God, extend Your light to all the leaders who hold the lives of others in their hands. Help them find a way forward to provide healing, protection and peace.
Blessing of the candles.
Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu, Melekh ha'olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel
Shabbat. Blessed are You, LORD our God, King of the universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the Shabbat lamp.

NEW CLASSES BEING OFFERED
THE CHOREOGRAPHY OF THE SHABBAT MORNING SERVICE
Have you ever wondered why, how, when, where, and even what are the reasons and customs that create the make-up and rhythm of the Shabbat Morning Service? You may know the prayers, you may be familiar with the melodies, and you even be acquainted with the blocking, but now gain an insight into the explanations and sharing of the nuances that is the choreography of Shabbat
Stu W Lehrer will literally conduct the zoom class following the Sim Shalom Shabbat Siddur and the Etz Hayim Chumash that are the Sefarim [books] that we use to conduct our services - There will be profound instances discovered during our trek through the tefilot [prayers] as well as amusing anecdotes why certain practices are incorporated
This 2-part course will run on Thursday November 9 and again on Thursday November 16 immediately following our Ma'ariv Services which begin at 7:30 PM. Questions as well as shared memories are as always, highly welcomed

"The Converts"
Sunday, November 5 at 7:00 PM
AT THE JCC
Follow in the footsteps of faith seekers who are on a mission to find their connection to Judaism. All are searching for identity and connection. By following their conversion process, we meet their teachers, families and are vicariously exposed to Judaism's rich customs and traditions.
Diana from Costa Rica found out about her Spanish-Portuguese Jewish roots from a high school genealogy project. Adam from Toronto was raised as a Pentecostal Christian but started questioning his beliefs as a teenager. Bianka from Warsaw wanted community and an intellectual approach to spirituality.

Three very different shipping containers are mistakenly mixed up resulting in a scramble to find the correct trailer. JOHNNY SALONIKI, the innocent son of a mafiosa, is pulled into the family business to find the missing trailers before time runs out.
HUMMUS FULL TRAILER is a colorful and hilarious look at how a couple of Arabs, Gay florists and orthodox Jews discover each other’s secrets all while trying to keep a wedding on track, hitmen away and flowers alive.
