A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
Many years ago I was studying Parashat Noah with a young student in preparation for her Bat Mitzvah. We were pondering a phrase from the Torah wherein the Text says, “Noah walked with God”. I asked what the phrase meant and why God would even want to walk with Noah. Her response was simple, beautiful, and brilliant. “Maybe” she said, “God was upset because of all the bad things that were occurring on earth, and further sad because God was going to destroy the world.” She then added the zinger. “Perhaps”, she opined, “God just needed a friend.”

It was at that point that the fireworks went off in my head. Of course God needed a friend. All humans need friends, and humans are created in God’s image. We especially need friends when we are facing the worst of times. So, of course God needed a friend at God’s worst time.

This is why I love studying torah with people of all ages. Each person, at each stage of his or her life, has a unique connection to the words of our holy Texts.

But what is the practical lesson to be inculcated from the notion that God needs a friend?

Just as God needed a friend in Noah, we all need friends. At different times in our lives we need friends for different reasons. But we need them nonetheless. And if each of us needs friends then it is safe to say that, at any given time, those around us need friends.

Open yourself up to that person looking for companionship and let someone else offer the same to you.

Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Torah Reading
Parashat Noach
Genesis 6:9-11:32
Here is the Reading

Noach (“Noah”) begins as God decides to destroy mankind with a flood. At God’s command, the righteous Noah builds an ark, where Noah, his family, and select animals survive the flood. Noah’s children bear children, and several generations develop. God confounds the speech of people building the Tower of Babel.

The Nightingale
By Kristin Hannah

The story centers around two sisters, Vianne Mauriac and Isabelle Rossingol. Vianne, the older and more responsible of the two is living a peaceful and happy life with her husband and daughter in the French countryside. At the threat of impending war, her life is upended when her husband, Antoine, is sent off the fight for France. As Germany begins to occupy France, Vianne is forced to learn how to survive in these new times and protect her young daughter, Sophie. Meanwhile, Isabelle, the younger more rebellious sister has spent much of her childhood being bounced from one boarding school to the next. After the death of their mother when she was just 4, Isabelle has been largely abandoned by her sister and their father. Neither one knew how to handle the rambunctious girl. As the war starts, Isabelle is not content to sit back and watch as her beloved city of Paris is overtaken by the enemy. Longing to make a difference in the war, Isabelle makes some shocking choices that will forever alter the trajectory of her life.

RABBI SAM NUNBERG

Rabbi Nunberg was our Rabbi at the JCC of LBI for just a short time, but his legacy lives on. He was instrumental in establishing the 18 mile run here on LBI in memory of the 11 Israeli Olympic Athletes murdered in Munich. This the 22nd anniversary of his sudden passing. Thinking of his wife Carole and the Britchkow-Nunberg family at this time.
