FBI ALERT
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
It is with great concern for the safety of our congregants that we make the following announcement:
Today the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued an alert to New Jersey synagogues, warning that it has has received credible information of a broad threat to synagogues in NJ. The FBI further asked that at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility.
The JCC’s president, Phil Rosenzweig, spoke with Patrolman Neil Rojas who oversees the Long Beach Township Police Department’s security detail. Officer Rojas is strongly recommending that the JCC switch to “Zoom only” services for the next 2 weeks. The JCC takes the safety of its members very seriously. We therefore are following this important recommendation.
As such: ALL OF THE JCC OF LBI’S RELIGIOUS SERVICES WILL BE VIA ZOOM FOR THE NEXT 2 WEEKS. IN ADDITION THE OFFICE WILL REMAIN CLOSED AND ANY PROGRAMS THAT WERE SCHEUDLED TO BE IN THE BUILDING ONLY, WILL BE CANCELLED.
WE WILL CONTINUE TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE CONGREGATION AS WE GET MORE INFORMATION.
We are saddened and frustrated by this reality but are taking all appropriate steps to ensure the safety of anyone connected to our JCC community. We will continue to be in touch with the Long Beach Township Police Department as information is available.
In the interim: Each one of us needs to do our part to work against antisemitism in all forms. Rabbi Jay requests that we say the following prayer:
Dear God we ask that You give us the strength, wisdom, and courage to make sure that any and all campaigns, plans, threats, or strategies against the Jewish People – whether from the hands of individuals, groups or nations – are prevented or exposed before they can cause harm. Amen.
Rabbi Jay is always available if you want to discuss this troubling issue in more detail.

Night of Fire and Glass: A Poem in Memory of Kristallnacht
STACEY ZISOOK ROBINSON, Z"L
NOVEMBER 9, 2017
|
|
Stars littered the ground
Crystal fire
Shards of ice
Glass
The smoke of a thousand thousand years
Ascended
Coiling upwards, twisted
With the memory of a People
Chosen once in light
Chosen again
In darkness
In ashes and in blood
Pounding rhythms shout out
Felt through soles
Driving forward, driving onward
Faster and faster and faster, and pulled forward
Pulled ever onward
In a rush, at a run, rippling in shadow
It invades your blood,
That rhythm,
That pulse,
That pull and push
That wraps ‘round your heart
In pounding and pulsing rhymes
That cradle your source
Your soul
The darkness swallows the cries
Of a thousand thousand lights
A thousand thousand years
A thousand thousand sighs
Of love
Of hope
Of God
Leaving only broken glass
And crystal fire
And glistening stars to lead us
Home.

A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
In this week’s Torah portion, Lech Lecha, God tells Avram (soon to be Avraham) to “Go forth from your native land and from your father’s house to the land that I will show you.” The land, it turns out, is Canaan. At the time of his departure, Avram leaves behind his aging father. This, seemingly selfish act, is compounded by the fact that Avram’s father has already has a son who died.
The story, as it unfolds, is compelling. Avram leaves his father behind and makes a name for himself. But there is more to the story. You see, if you go back just a few verses to the end of Parashat Noach, you will see that Avram’s father actually had been travelling to Canaan when, for some unknown reason, he stops in Haran.
It is sometime after the family stops its excursion to Canaan that God tells Avram to leave.
Sometimes we start something and, for whatever reason, we need to stop. Abraham’s journey did not start with him. It started with his father. It will continue with his son (Isaac), his grandson(Jacob), and his great grandchildren (the 12 tribes). Indeed, it continues to today.
The message is three-fold.
First, we cannot expect to finish all of the tasks we have planned. Life just isn’t that way. Indeed, Pirkei Avot reports that Rabbi Tarfon]used to say: “It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it.” If you have a worthy task, you should undertake, but you do not have to finish it.
This leads to the second message. You should pass your dreams on to your children or someone else.
And finally, it is okay to begin where another has ended. Indeed, by continuing his father’s journey, Avram is honoring him. Avraham’s story may be as much about finishing what his father started as it is about being commanded by God to go.
One last thing. Rose Valentine posed an interesting question. Near the end of this Torah portion, God changes “Avram’s” name to “Avraham” and “Sarai’s” name to “Sarah”.
There are many reasons given for the change and perhaps we can discuss that at another time. For right now, I have a simple assignment for you. If you could change your name, what would you change it to?

THIS WEEK'S FILM
Latter Day Jew
Sunday, November 6 1:00pm

Documentary English
|
|
Latter Day Jew is a documentary feature film following H. Alan Scott, a gay, former Mormon/converted Jew/cancer survivor/writer/comedian, as he finds his spiritual path and prepares for his Bar Mitzvah. The film will cover his Mormon upbringing, eventual conversion to Judaism at age 31 and preparation for his Bar Mitzvah in the Fall of 2017 at age 35. But before he can become a man in the eyes of Jewish law, he wants to figure out what it means to be the best Jew he can be and even figure out what that means. Latter Day Jew chronicles his hilarious and often moving journey, and in the process shows that spiritual and cultural identity is deeper than just what we are born into or what our families believed and taught us.

The Nightingale
By Kristin Hannah
The story centers around two sisters, Vianne Mauriac and Isabelle Rossingol. Vianne, the older and more responsible of the two is living a peaceful and happy life with her husband and daughter in the French countryside. At the threat of impending war, her life is upended when her husband, Antoine, is sent off the fight for France. As Germany begins to occupy France, Vianne is forced to learn how to survive in these new times and protect her young daughter, Sophie. Meanwhile, Isabelle, the younger more rebellious sister has spent much of her childhood being bounced from one boarding school to the next. After the death of their mother when she was just 4, Isabelle has been largely abandoned by her sister and their father. Neither one knew how to handle the rambunctious girl. As the war starts, Isabelle is not content to sit back and watch as her beloved city of Paris is overtaken by the enemy. Longing to make a difference in the war, Isabelle makes some shocking choices that will forever alter the trajectory of her life.
