A NEW YEAR'S MESSAGE FROM THE JCC PRESIDENT
|
Happy New Year!
Hello everyone, by the time you read this, Irene, the first puppy and I will be visiting our children and grandchildren in North Carolina. Like many of you, we have had to change our plans, a lot, since last New Years Eve., due to the pandemic. Also, like many of you I am tired of having to change plans, postpone trips, miss events, and not be with friends and loved ones. Like everyone else I am concerned about what may come next, how many variants of Covid we have to go through before it ends? I have a feeling that like the flu shot, we will need a Covid booster every year. This may be the “new normal”, but compared to where we were back in February 2019 with the onset of Covid, this is something we all can work with.
Like you, I missed having the JCC opened more this past summer season then it was, but compare it to the previous summer, we had taken giant leaps forward. We had the two summer bazaars, we had beach and parking lot services, we had two in-person entertainment events, and most importantly Shabbat and High Holiday Services at the JCC. These were big steps for us, and I want to thank everyone who supported the JCC and stood beside us as we took our first steps to being the place Irene and I fell in love with so many years ago. Even with a Covid abridged 2021, we have a great deal to be proud of, that I hope we can maintain as the JCC goes forward. Our membership has increased during the pandemic, with virtual members that are paying full dues and participating with us via zoom. Our virtual services have been very successful, and as time goes forward, they will get better. They will never replace our in-person worship, but will allow our membership to join us when they are at their winter homes, or away. We have been able to offer our congregants and others the opportunity to pray 7 days and 7 nights a week. Those of us that need to say Kaddish, can do so with our fellow members, and not seek those services elsewhere. We have found a songbird in Chazan Geller, that we look forward to hearing her in the future, both in the room or on zoom. We have done a lot where others have done a little, or were forced to stand still, so thank the Rabbi, your board, and most of all yourselves for how good of a position that we are in. I know it has been a slow process, and at times, an arduous one. We have taken steps forward only to have to take two steps back, but this was done to ensure the health and well being of all of us.
We all our holding our breaths, waiting for the Holiday Season to pass, and see how the Omicron variant will affect us. The news I am hearing is that it is highly contagious, but not as strong as other variants have been. Let us all hope it proves to be that way, and the numbers begin to drop, as they were before Thanksgiving. I feel strongly that we will be in a better position in the spring and summer of 2022, than we were in 2021, and much better then 2019. 2020 in the Chinese New Year is the year of the tiger. The tiger is a powerful symbol in Chinese culture and represents bravery and forcefulness. Let’s us hope it also represents normalcy. I look forward to seeing all of you in person this summer, as it is also the summer of the tenth anniversary of our new JCC building, so we have a lot to look forward to. In closing Irene and I wish all of you a Happy, Healthy, and Covid free New Year!
Mike

MOVIE NITE - Thursday evening January 20th
40th Anniversary of the film "The Chosen"
Watch the film on your own and join us for discussion after Ma'ariv at 7:45.
In this provocative drama based on Chaim Potok’s bestselling novel, frictions over tradition and modernity test the vexed friendship of two Jewish teens from different religious factions in 1940s Williamsburg. Reuven (Barry Miller) is the son of a worldly progressive scholar; Danny (Robby Benson) is the son of an ultra-Orthodox rabbi (iconic Oscar-winning actors Maximilian Schell and Rod Steiger play the fathers). Though ideologically split, the boys bond around their love of stickball, until a rift over the creation of a Jewish homeland prompts painful choices and a search for one’s own destiny. Director Jeremy Kagan crafts a nuanced, authentic portrayal of Hasidic life and post-WWII turmoil within American Jewry.

In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. You are also welcome to share with the minyan some special memories of your loved one.
