A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
We are living in perilous times.
I am not referring to the pandemic, nor am I hinting at climate change. While each of these deserves attention, instead, I am referring to a report released last week by Amnesty International in which that (immensely biased) organization concluded (without any objective proof) that Israel, the homeland of the Jewish people and the only democracy in the middle east, is an apartheid state. That Amnesty International would reach such a libelous conclusion comes as no surprise to those who know the organization and the anti-Israel slant of its members. For an in-depth look at who the folks at Amnesty are, and their undying disdain for the Jewish Homeland, click here:
Indeed, the ultimate purpose of the report is not to find Israel guilty of wrongdoing; That was a given. The real purpose is to completely delegitimize the historical homeland of the Jewish people. As such, it is a report borne of nothing other than antisemitism.
The bigger problem is that, despite the report’s obvious (and purposeful) inaccuracies, Israel haters around the globe will ignore the proof of the authors’ ill-intent and waive it as proof positive that Israel is a rogue state. When you combine misinformation, such as this, with the obvious ignorance of renowned celebrities when they speak about Israel, the Jewish people, and/or the Holocaust, times are, indeed, perilous.
Click just below to read two articles which take an in-depth look at the report (you will be appalled):
How do we fight this kind of insidious misinformation? Here are a few ways:
1) Keep doing Jewish. By a Challah. Say Kiddush over wine. Come to services. Study Torah with us or join us for any of our classes or programs.
2) Keep yourself actively informed about Israel and the middle east.
3) Keep giving to charities, Jewish and secular.
4) Plan a trip to Israel. The JCC is in the beginning stages of planning a congregational trip by next year. Join us!
5) Reach out to your non-Jewish friends and neighbors and let them know that there is more to Israel than what they may be reading, or hearing, in the news. The JCC board has authorized the establishment of an “interfaith outreach committee” to be headed by Rob Van Naarden. Help us to begin planning for this important new committee.
Finally, if you hear or see anything that is anti-Israel and/or antisemitic, let me know.
Tomorrow evening I will be talking about the importance of light in our tradition.
Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay
