A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
In Parashat Ki Tissa, God gives Moses the final instructions for building the Mishkan and its various component parts. At this point the Torah text switches to a new, and strange, topic. It is here that God gives Moses very specific instructions about Shabbat and, in particular, reinforces the strict prohibition against working on shabbat.
It is an odd spot for a Shabbat reminder (Pun intended Rose). One reason proposed by the Rabbis is very interesting. Since God has just finished giving instructions for the construction of what will be a beautiful and holy tabernacle, God assumes that the people will rush to begin work and will not stop until it is completed. It is not an unreasonable thought by the Holy One (Especially considering the haste with which the Israelites sought to build the golden calf in Moses’ absence).
If the people will, in fact, be in a rush to build the tabernacle, God decides that they will need to be reminded that they are not permitted to work on Shabbat, and that the prohibition applies even to the building of God’s earthly abode and its attendant structures and utensils.
Thus, by its placement at precisely the literary point where the people would commence work on the holy space, the people are reminded that Shabbat trumps the other commandments.
To build it holy, to not build is holier still. An important message, indeed.
Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Thank you to all those who participated in our Oops Contest last week. 536 people opened the email, 79 people clicked on the link to the Shabbat Reminder, 17 people participated in the contest and collectively 26 mistakes were found - some a matter of style by the way. The best response was - "I only found one mistake!!!"
AND THE WINNER IS SHEILA WEISEL with 17 errors found. Your Purim package is on the way!!!!
PS I am most concerned about the content and visual accompaniment in the Shabbat Reminder. I will try to catch the misspellings and typos in the future but.... so just enjoy our weekly email.

The Ladino language is a Hebrew-Spanish hybrid that developed in Medieval Spain. Ladino music developed in medieval al-Andalus, and was passed down through oral tradition, largely, though not exclusively, from mother to daughter. It is marked by drama, intensity, and beautiful, virtuosic melodies.

"Jerusalem Maiden" by Talia Carner
The poignant, colorful, and unforgettable story of a young woman in early 20th-century Jerusalem who must choose between her faith and her passion, Jerusalem Maiden heralds the arrival of a magnificent new literary voice, Talia Carner. In the bestselling vein of The Red Tent, The Kite Runner, and A Thousand Splendid Suns, Jerusalem Maiden brilliantly evokes the sights and sounds of the Middle East during the final days of the Ottoman Empire. Historical fiction and Bible lovers will be captivated by this thrilling tale of a young Jewish woman during a fascinating era, her inner struggle with breaking the Second Commandment, and her ultimate transcendence through self-discovery.

Ladino Music from Yesterday to Today
A Virtual Presentation by
Sarah Aroeste
Sunday, February 27 at 5:00 PM
|
|
Come along on a virtual journey as we learn about Ladino culture and history with this talented singer, songwriter, educator and storyteller, Sarah Aroeste.
Inspired by her family's Sephardic roots in Macedonia and Greece, Sarah has spent the last two decades bringing her contemporary style of original and traditional Ladino music to audiences around the world.
She works tirelessly to keep Ladino music alive for a new generation. Her musical style combines traditional Mediterranean Sephardic sounds with contemporary influences such as rock, pop, and jazz. To date, she has released seven recordings, most recently an all-Ladino Hanukkah CD, Hanuká (2021).
Through her artful performance of music, Sarah will show you how Ladino culture has existed and transformed from the 15th century until today. It is sure to be a meaningful and joyful way to spend your late afternoon.
This is a free event for JCC members. For non-members, tickets are $18.00 per zoom link.
Zoom link will be sent prior to event.
