This week’s Torah Portion begins: “He (God) Called to Moses…”. (Vayikra 1:1). Rabbi Jonathan Sacks tells us that, because of the sentence structure, the “call” was not vocal but, rather, it was Moses coming to a full understanding of his “calling”, or mission (as given by God).
In the Megillah, Esther becomes the Queen and is faced with the task of saving the Jewish people. Mordechai convinces her that this task is her “calling” when he says: “Who knows if it was not for just this moment that you achieved your position?” (Esther 4:14)
This year we will be celebrating Purim, indoors for the first time in two years, on Wednesday, March 16. This return, while it will bring us joy, will also be done with the tragic backdrop of a war in Europe in which innocent lives are being lost, a refugee crisis is being created, and the Jewish and non-Jewish Ukrainian communities are being destroyed.
On Purim, it is a mitzvah to perform the commandment of matanot l’evyonim (giving gifts to the poor). In light of the humanitarian crisis I urge you to perform this mitzvah by giving to Ukrainian relief. There are numerous worthy organizations who are working to bring relief and you should give to any organization with which you feel comfortable. Here is a non-exhaustive list of charities that you might consider: Jewish
The Torah reminds no less than 36 times to be kind to the stranger because we were once strangers in a strange land. The Torah also tells us not to stand idly by the blood of another (Leviticus 19:16) and that we should not remain indifferent (Deuteronomy 22:3) . We simply cannot ignore those who are in peril today. Others are bleeding and we cannot look the other way. Our tradition, our ancestors, our descendants, and God demand that we offer help.
If we have the ability we should. Vayikra, “God called”.
There is little doubt that God is giving us our calling at this very moment. We need to ask ourselves the same question that Mordecai posed to Esther. “Who knows if it was not for just this moment that you achieved your position?”
Shabbat Shalom

SHABBAT ZACHOR
is the Shabbat immediately preceding Purim. Deuteronomy 25:17-19, describing the attack by Amalek, is recounted. There is a tradition from the Talmud that Haman, the antagonist of the Purim story, was descended from Amalek. The portion that is read includes a commandment to remember the attack by Amalek, and therefore at this public reading both men and women make a special effort to hear the reading.

UKRAINE UPDATE
There are 200,000 Jews living in Ukraine today – over 40,000 are elderly and living on limited means. Many more are at risk today. Our partners are working around the clock to ensure uninterrupted humanitarian aid including food, medicine, winter relief, and emergency assistance for the most vulnerable. Your contribution will go to work right away helping those affected by this crisis.
Thank you for letting them know they are not alone and making a difference!
