A MESSAGE FROM

OUR RABBI

ALL FOR HOME AND HOME FOR ALL

The very last line of the Book of Exodus provides much information about God’s intended relationship with the Israelites and the Jewish world. Therein it says:

(T)he cloud of God would be on the Mishkan (Holy Tabernacle) by day, and fire would be on it at night, before the eyes of ALL of the House of Israel in ALL their journeys.

By telling us that God is present day and night we are, in effect, learning that God is always available. However, God’s presence is not limited to any one Israelite or group of Israelites. God is present to ALL of the House of Israel and at ALL times.

This simple sentence provides a foundational concept for what our JCC is and should be. Synagogues are the modern day version of the Mishkan. While we don’t (as a general rule) see God in the form of a cloud or fire, we do have a sanctuary with an Eternal Light. We may not have the Ark of the Pact carrying the Ten Commandments, but we do have an Ark that holds our Torah scrolls. We may not have Priestly garments, but we do have Tallitot.

When the JCC building was dedicated, it was not dedicated for the use or benefit of a select group of people. The intention was to create a destination where anyone connected to the larger Jewish community could come to pray, or to learn, or to be Jewishly rejuvenated, or to be culturally stimulated.

In addition, today, some folks come to be in the kitchen while cooking, and others come to be in the kitchen while playing pickleball.

The JCC, like the Ocean to which it is so near, has a strong gravitational pull. Like the Lighthouse in Barnegat which guides ships away from the shore, the JCC should be a beacon to all Jews everywhere that brings them safely in from wherever they are. This goal has never been more important than it is today.

As a community, we have an obligation to our biblical ancestors, to our more recent founders, and to God, to make sure that in all we do, we ensure that our “tabernacle” can be seen, and used, by “ALL the House of Israel and at ALL times”.

God seeks relationship with us and desires that we be in (good) relationship with each other. Presence, vision, kindness, and resolve to do what is correct, should always be our intent and in our actions.

A home. A heart. A sanctuary. A place for us. A place for God.

Chazak! Chazak! Venischazeik! (Be Strong! Be Strong! And may we be strengthened)

Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

TORAH READING

Parashat Pekudei

Exodus 38:21-40:38

Pekudei (“Accountings Of”) is the final Torah reading in the Book of Exodus. It describes the making of priestly garments worn in the Mishkan (Tabernacle) and the completion of its construction. At God’s command, Moses erects the Mishkan and puts its vessels in place, and God's presence fills the Mishkan.

The Color of Water By: James McBride

In The Color of Water, McBride retraces his mother's footsteps and, through her searing and spirited voice, recreates her remarkable story. The daughter of a failed itinerant Orthodox rabbi, she was born Rachel Shilsky (actually Ruchel Dwara Zylska) in Poland on April 1, 1921. Fleeing pogroms, her family emigrated to America and ultimately settled in Suffolk, Virginia, a small town where anti-Semitism and racial tensions ran high. With candor and immediacy, Ruth describes her parents' loveless marriage; her fragile, handicapped mother; her cruel, sexually-abusive father; and the rest of the family and life she abandoned. At seventeen, after fleeing Virginia and settling in New York City, Ruth married a black minister and founded the all- black New Brown Memorial Baptist Church in her Red Hook living room. "God is the color of water," Ruth McBride taught her children, firmly convinced that life's blessings and life's values transcend race. Twice widowed, and continually confronting overwhelming adversity and racism, Ruth's determination, drive and discipline saw her dozen children through college—and most through graduate school. At age 65, she herself received a degree in social work from Temple University.

PJP Series "What Jews Think”

2023-2024

Thursday, April 11 @8:30 PM Dr. Andrea Dara Cooper, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

“Jewish Philosophy and Feminism”

In this talk, we’ll consider how scholars and theologians have attempted to find a feminist space within the Jewish interpretive tradition. How can contemporary approaches to gender analysis allow us to understand the use of gendered terms in Judaism, and in what ways can Judaism be both challenged and revitalized by these approaches? Andrea Dara Cooper is Associate Professor and Leonard and Tobee Kaplan Scholar in Modern Jewish Thought and Culture in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she teaches a range of courses on religion and culture, the history of Judaism, gender, and philosophy. She is the author of Gendering Modern Jewish Thought (Indiana University Press, 2021).

ENDOWMENT FUND

Herb z"l and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio.

Since then, three additional individual Endowment Funds have been established. Other members are encouraged to also provide for the future of our JCC by establishing similar funds. Please consider adding to this number.

A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
