Sunday we will be celebrating a very important Jewish holiday – no – it’s not Shavuot as that will be in another week.
This holiday falls out on the 28th day of Iyar (Sunday, May 29th this year) and it marks the day on which Jerusalem was reunited as a city during the Six Day war in 1967. We call the holiday Yom Yerushalyim (Jerusalem Day)
Jerusalem became the capital city of the Jewish people in the time of King David who conquered it and made it the seat of his monarchy in approximately 1000 B.C.E. It was conquered twice in antiquity, the second time by the Romans in 70 C.E. The destruction of Jerusalem was a watershed event in Jewish history that began thousands of years of mourning for Jerusalem.
When the Christians took control of Jerusalem, the Church of The Holy Sepulcher was built on the spot where a piece of Jesus’ staff had been found. Where the Temple had once stood, they turned into a garbage heap. They did this to show Christianity’s ascendance over Judaism. When the Muslims conquered Jerusalem they cleared the Temple Mount of the refuse and built the Dome of the Rock. This was also to show domination over Judaism.
During the two millennia of exile, Jerusalem remained the Jews’ spiritual capital. To this day, Jewish people face in the direction of Jerusalem for prayer and Jewish services are filled with references to Jerusalem.
In 1948 the Old City had Jewish, Arab and Christian inhabitants. After the War for Independence the Jewish presence is forced out and the Old City fell into the hands of the Jordanians. They destroyed every synagogue that was in the Jewish Quarter and desecrated the Jewish cemeteries. They sought to wipe out the Jewish present and the Jewish past.
Unlike these other conquerors, when Israel unified Jerusalem they did not deny the presence of the previous inhabitants. No Moslem or Christian sites were demolished. Indeed, ever since 1967, Israel has set out to preserve the presence of Christianity and Islam in the city, never denying their history there. At the same time, Israel has, through excavation and careful study demonstrated that, in the last several thousand years, the only permanent presence has been that of the Jewish people.
Today, according to MyJewishlearning: “Yom Yerushalyim is gradually becoming a “pilgrimage” day, when thousands of Israelis travel (some hike) to Jerusalem to demonstrate solidarity with the city.”
The highlight of any trip to Israel is the trip to Jerusalem and the Western Wall. This Sunday take a few moments to consider how lucky we are to live in a time that the Jewish people have a homeland and that its eternal capital is Jerusalem.

Cilka's Journey by Heather Morris
Discussion Leader: Sondi Pripstein
Cilka is just sixteen years old when she is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in 1942, where the commandant immediately notices how beautiful she is. Forcibly separated from the other women prisoners, Cilka learns quickly that power, even unwillingly taken, equals survival.
When the war is over and the camp is liberated, freedom is not granted to Cilka: She is charged as a collaborator for sleeping with the enemy and sent to a Siberian prison camp. But did she really have a choice? And where do the lines of morality lie for Cilka, who was send to Auschwitz when she was still a child?
In Siberia, Cilka faces challenges both new and horribly familiar, including the unwanted attention of the guards. But when she meets a kind female doctor, Cilka is taken under her wing and begins to tend to the ill in the camp, struggling to care for them under brutal conditions.
Confronting death and terror daily, Cilka discovers a strength she never knew she had. And when she begins to tentatively form bonds and relationships in this harsh, new reality, Cilka finds that despite everything that has happened to her, there is room in her heart for love.
From child to woman, from woman to healer, Cilka's journey illuminates the resilience of the human spirit―and the will we have to survive.
