A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
HOLY TIME
Parashat Emor contains a calendar of sacred times; the Torah calls them “Mo-Ahday Adonai” (Fixed times of the Lord). I will leave this week’s Bat Mitzvah women to tell you more about the Parasha.
Instead, I want to use this space to discuss Holy time at the JCC.
Two weeks ago, we celebrated the Bat Mitzvah of Eliana Wim Braun. It was a remarkable day in which the atmosphere in the JCC was festive and holy. It felt this way because not only was Eliana’s davening, chanting, and D’var flawless, but here entire family participated fully in the service.
Eliana’s Bat Mitzvah was followed last Shabbat by the aufruf of our daughter Samantha, and our future son-in-law, Reid. The JCC was filled with family, friends and congregants. We davened and sang and ate good food. For the entirety of a water-soaked Shabbat there was such joy that it could only be described as holy.
Now this coming Shabbat the JCC (and Zoom) will, once again, be filled with friends and family as we will be having the Adult Bat Mitzvah’s of Irene Babst, Debbie Levy, and Ina Morgenthal. Each of them has worked hard under the tutelage of Ira Morgenthal and, together with Ira, they will be leading portions of the service and chanting Haftarah. This is a momentous occasion for the JCC as it is the first Adult B’nai Mitzvah service we have ever had. I know there will be Smiling and singing and probably a few tears. And as each of these women get their Alliyah, we will be thinking Holy, Holy, Holy.
The Torah is Holy. God is Holy. The Shabbat service is Holy. But what our tradition really tells us, what it wants us to internalize and to share, is that time can be made holy. Since time is irretrievable, we need to make sure to make as much of it as holy as possible. This is one of the Torah’s big lessons, time can, and should, be sanctified.
Three weeks and three joyous and meaningful occasions, each with its own distinct flavor and each equally holy. A good time to be a part of our special community.
Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Lag BaOmer
33rd day of counting the Omer
Tuesday May 9
The day celebrates the death and life of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai who was a Mishnaic sage back in the 2nd century. Today it is celebrated by going out to the fields and woods, where you can most easily appreciate G‑d’s magnificent creation. Take a walk in the park or over the Causeway bridge and breathe in the fresh air.

THE TEACHER
IRA MORGENTHAL
A very special Morah
| |
Ira Morgenthal began teaching a few adult students how to read Hebrew about two years ago. The class met on Zoom every Thursday afternoon with Ira, as well as studying together during the week. It seemed logical for the these ladies to celebrate their success with a bat mitzvah. With the sudden death of their beloved classmate, Millie Pollack, the class decided to have their bat mitzvah ceremony in her honor. May her memory be a blessing.
MILLIE POLLACK z"l
Beloved classmate
who we honor this Shabbat
| |
Irene Babst
Irene, past president of the WAX and the editor of our bulletin, enjoys her Hebrew Class so much she does not schedule any activities for Thursday afternoons.
| |
Deb Levy
Deb lives in Maine and came to the JCC family as a long time friend of Rabbi Jay and Sheri. Via Zoom she has become a regular on Friday evenings.
| |
Ina Morgenthal
Ina's interest in her Jewish education was spurred by the JCC trip to Israel. She delights in the weekly Adult Education classes at the synagogue.

A Thank You from Sammi & Reid....
Dear JCC of LBI,
Sammi and I wanted to thank you for hosting such a special weekend for our aufruf. There were so many thoughtful details, from the decorations, colors, pamphlets, cake, candy, etc. The congregation truly went above and beyond to make us and our families feel so welcomed. My Grandma Barbara specifically said it was the best way she could have spent her birthday and my parents told us we were really lucky to have such a beautiful community at the JCC whenever we visit LBI. Additionally, we know how much it meant to Rabbi Mike and Sheri to be able to share this celebration with their JCC family, and so we thank you for being a part of our families' special moment. We look forward to seeing everyone again this summer, hopefully with sunnier weather at a beach service.
With love,
Reid and Sammi
