In the simplest of terms, what I love about Parashat Kedoshim is its clarion call to the Jewish people. In order to understand it, let’s look at the first 2 verses of Chapter 19:
The Lord spoke to Moses saying: Speak to the WHOLE Israelite community and say to them: “You shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy.
While God’s proclamation that the Jewish people must be holy is a highwater mark moment for the Israelites, what makes this moment truly extraordinary is the word “WHOLE”. God’s requirement is that every Israelite be holy. Not just the priests, not just the chieftains, not just the judges, not just the men. The rule is addressed to the entire population.
Why is this important? Because it means that we, each of us, have an equal responsibility to represent the Jewish people. It is a burden but, at the same time, it is a privilege. Think of what holy means and then do holy. I’m going to leave this discussion right here, but if you want to share with me what you think “holy” means, please feel free to email or text me.
NEW TOPIC: Today we celebrated Israel’s 74th Birthday. I was listening to a Times of Israel Daily briefing today. Israel is important to us today, but I want to give you just one sense of how important it was to the Jews of 1948.
After World War II, millions of European Jews were without a home. They had spent the war in concentrations camps or in hiding. Some attempted to go to back to their homes, but were attacked by the non-Jewish nationals (e.g. Poles and Czechoslovakians) who did not want the Jews back. In 1946 there were actually pogroms against Jews in European countries.(Reconsider how horrific this was: The Jews who had miraculously survived the Nazis were actually attacked when they tried to return to their rightful homes).
In 1948 there were in excess of 250,000 Jews in the Displacement camps. The European countries didn’t want them. The United States (yes our own beloved country) did not want them. They had absolutely no place to go.
This all changed when the state of Israel was declared on May 5, 1948. At that instant, the Jews of Europe had a choice of where to go. They could then go to the one place on earth where they were welcomed with open arms; one place that was committed to taking them in. That place was Israel. The Jewish people finally had a place to go to escape the horrors they had experienced during centuries of living as the “other”.
On this 74th Birthday let’s not lose sight of the impact that the reopening of our homeland had on the Jewish people and the world.

It details dozens of laws regulating all aspects of life, including observing Shabbat, loving one’s neighbor, and leaving portions of a field for the poor. It ends by detailing punishments for certain types of idolatry and sexual misconduct.

Hotel Moscow by Talia Carner
Brooke Fielding, a thirty-eight-year-old New York investment manager and daughter of Jewish Holocaust survivors, finds her life suddenly upended in late September 1993 when her job is unexpectedly put in jeopardy. Brooke accepts an invitation to join a friend on a mission to Moscow to teach entrepreneurial skills to Russian businesswomen, which will also give her a chance to gain expertise in the new, vast emerging Russian market. Though excited by the opportunity to save her job and be one of the first Americans to visit Russia after the fall of communism, she also wonders what awaits her in the country that persecuted her mother just a generation ago.
Inspired by the women she meets, Brooke becomes committed to helping them investigate the crime that threatens their businesses. But as the uprising of the Russian parliament against President Boris Yeltsin turns Moscow into a volatile war zone, Brooke will find that her involvement comes at a high cost. For in a city where “capitalism” is still a dirty word, where neighbors spy on neighbors and the new economy is in the hands of a few dangerous men, nothing Brooke does goes unnoticed—and a mistake in her past may now compromise her future.

In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. You are COalso welcome to share with the minyan some special memories of your loved one.

ENDOWMENT FUND
Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio.
Since then, three additional individual Endowment Funds have been established. Other members are encouraged to also provide for the future of our JCC by establishing similar funds. Please consider adding to this number.
A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.
Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.

ENDOWMENT FUND
This fund was established to assure the continuity of our JCC, and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. While a donation of any amount is encouraged, a donation of at least $50,000 allows the donor to name a special or specific Endowment Fund in memory or honor of a specific person event, or family.
GENERAL FUND
Donations to this fund are not earmarked but placed in the general administrative account. Donations to this fund can be in honor or memory of a person, event, or family.
