Silent, Strong Dad
by Karen K. Boyer
He never looks for praises.
He's never one to boast.
He just goes on quietly working
For those he loves the most.
His dreams are seldom spoken.
His wants are very few,
And most of the time his worries
Will go unspoken, too.
He's there...a firm foundation
Through all our storms of life,
A sturdy hand to hold onto
In times of stress and strife.
A true friend we can turn to
When times are good or bad.
One of our greatest blessings,
The man that we call Dad.

A MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
In this week’s Torah portion, the Mishkan is assembled and inaugurated. The Israelites are now ready to begin their march toward the Promised Land. The Torah text makes it clear that the Mishkan is intended to be God’s abode on earth, and the Israelites do not move without it. As I have discussed elsewhere, the brilliance of this is that it shows the Israelites, and the world, that God can be anywhere at any time.
The Torah tells us that:
“When the Ark was to set out, Moses would say: “Advance, Oh Lord! May Your enemies be scattered and may Your foes flee before you!”
The depiction here is that God is a warrior getting ready to battle on behalf of the Israelites. This is important for a people who are about to fight the inhabitants of the Promised Land.
But I think there is a bigger message. It’s not only that God is portable, but it is also that God’s message is portable. It is that the divine within us is portable.
We can therefor do the good things that the Torah asks of us anywhere. This is how we have survived as a people. If God and Torah had been tethered to Israel then, when our ancestors were dispersed, we would have disappeared as a people. We would have been a footnote in history.
But, because God is moveable, because the Torah is portable, and because the divine image is portable, we continued to exist, even to thrive, when we had no homeland.
We can do good deeds anywhere. We can make the world a better place from and vantage point. We can care for the Stranger, the widow, and the orphan whether we are home or away, night or day. A portable God helps to create a portable mitzvah machine. What a glorious tradition we are each a part of.
Our mobility continues on our lovely Island. This week we are having Friday night services at 6:00 PM on the 24th Street beach in Spray Beach (the street the JCC is on). Next week we will be having Friday night services at 6:00 PM on the beach in Loveladies, (just south of St Clare Church). Join Us for what are guaranteed to be fun and meaningful services.
Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Concealed by By Esther Amini
Esther Amini grew up in Queens, New York, during the freewheeling 1960s. She also grew up in a Persian-Jewish household, the American-born daughter of parents who had fled Mashhad, Iran. In Concealed, she tells the story of being caught between these two worlds: the dutiful daughter of tradition-bound parents who hungers for more self-determination than tradition allows.
A Zoom link will be sent shortly before the event.
