A MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
|
At the end of this week’s Torah Portion, Shelakh Lekha, we find the third paragraph of the Shema:
Speak to the Israelite people and instruct them to make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments…. That shall be your fringe; look at it and recall all the commandments of Adonai and observe them, so that you do not follow your heart and eyes in your lustful urge….
The purpose of the Fringe is to remind us of God and that the commandments should be an integral part of our lives.
It might seem a bit ridiculous to be wearing these fringes all of the time but, if you think about it, it is ingenious. Have you ever driven down the road at, say, a few miles over the speed limit and then you see a police cruiser parked? The first thing you do is slow down. Have you ever noticed that when the boss walks into a place of business, the employees tend to work just a bit harder?
The fringes perform the “someone-important-is-watching” function. If we are going through our days with no reminder of who we are, or the higher purpose we might be serving, we might lose the energy to be mindful to the good deeds we should be doing. The fringes’ purpose is to make sure that at all times we remember that we were created in God’s image and that we have a Torah to live up to.
Our tradition has other reminders of holiness. The Mezuzah is a reminder of the gateway into and out of holiness. Tefillin are a reminder that we should always keep Torah close to our head and our heart. The connector here is the Shema. Both the Mezuzah and Tefillin contain the Shema within them. The fringes are a subject contained within the Shema. Inasmuch as the Shema is the protector of a key principle of our faith, that there is only one God, it is not surprising that it connects each of these symbols.
Humans inherently need to be reminded of the higher purposes we serve. The fringes remind us of the Torah and the commandments which were given to us by the one true God.
Look at them, be reminded by them, be move by them to do good in the world. And this should not be a fringe thought.
Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Shelach (“Send”) tells the story of Israelite spies journeying into Canaan, the negative report they bring back, and the resulting punishment decreed upon the Israelites: to wander and die in the desert over forty years. It ends with laws about sacrifices, the story of a man who desecrates Shabbat, and the commandment to wear ritual fringes

Concealed by By Esther Amini
Esther Amini grew up in Queens, New York, during the freewheeling 1960s. She also grew up in a Persian-Jewish household, the American-born daughter of parents who had fled Mashhad, Iran. In Concealed, she tells the story of being caught between these two worlds: the dutiful daughter of tradition-bound parents who hungers for more self-determination than tradition allows.
A Zoom link will be sent shortly before the event.
