P’sukei D’Zimrah 5, Y’Hee Khivode, God’s Glory
Before we begin this week, I have a question. Did any of you do my proposed exercise and write down what you were grateful for every day? (Hint, I have not heard from many of you!)
We are moving through P’sukei D’Zimrah section of the weekday Shacharit Service. This section is mostly about praising God. Last week we looked at Psalm 100 a Psalm of Thanksgiving to God for something good that happens to us.
Y’Hee Khivode is a collection of 18 verses from Psalms, Proverbs, and Chronicles. Each verse contains God’s name. Can you surmise why there might be 18 verses?
Essentially, these are the ideas contained in this collection of verses:
1. God is great beyond all measure.
2. God is the ruler of the universe.
3. Unlike the plans of human beings, God’s designs are enduring.
4. God’s designs include: creation, choosing Zion and choosing Israel (which God, being merciful, will never abandon).
5. A plea to answer our cries.
Here it is in English:
The glory of Adonai will endure forever; Adonai will rejoice in God’s creatures. The Name of Adonai will be blessed from now forever. From the rising of the sun to its setting, praised is the Name of Adonai. High above all nations is Adonai; God’s glory extends beyond the heavens. Adonai, Your Name is forever, Adonai, Your fame is for generations. Adonai has established His throne in heaven, God’s sovereignty is everything. The heavens will rejoice, the earth will exult, and the nations proclaim: Adonai is Sovereign. Adonai is King, Adonai was King; Adonai will be King forever and ever.” Adonai will reign for all eternity [when] nations have perished from God’s earth. Those who embody evil will vanish from God’s land, God disrupts the intention of peoples. Many plans are in the heart of man, but [only] Adonai’s plans will endure. God’s plans will stand forever, the plans of God’s heart throughout all generations. For God spoke and it came to be; God commanded and the world took form. Adonai has chosen Zion; God desired it for God’s dwelling place. God chose Jacob to be God’s, The people Israel for God’s treasure. For Adonai will not abandon God’s people, and God will nor forsake God’s heritage. God being merciful, grants atonement for sin; and does not destroy. God frequently withdraws God’s anger and does not allow God’s rage to be all-consuming. Save us Adonai. Answer us, Sovereign, when we call.
So much praise of God. Do you think that God needs it? If so, why? If not, why?
Next week we begin looking at Ashrei.

Parashat Chukat-Balak 5783
Numbers 19:1-25:9
Here is the Parshah
PARSHAH
Chukat (“Law Of”) opens by describing the process of burning the red heifer and using its ashes for purification. It also tells the stories of the deaths of Miriam and Aaron, Moses’ striking of a rock to bring forth water, a plague of venomous snakes, and battles against the Emorite kings Sihon and Og. Balak tells the story of the Moabite king Balak, who hires Balaam to curse the Israelites. Balaam’s donkey speaks along the way, and Balaam ends up blessing the Israelites. The portion ends with a story about Israelite men sinning with Moabite women and the stabbing of an Israelite and a Midianite.

REMEMBERING OPERATION THUNDERBOLT - 47 YEARS LATER
When Air France Flight 139 left the Tel Aviv airport on the afternoon of June 27, 1976, the passengers and crew could not have imagined the terrifying, yet heroic, events of which they would be a part. The flight flew from Tel Aviv to Athens, and, after a quick refuel, was on its way to Paris. The four terrorists who boarded in Athens, however, had other plans. Not long after the plane began to cruise, the terrorists forced the pilot to redirect the flight to Uganda, an African nation controlled then by the ruthless dictator Idi Amin, who gave the hijackers his full support. Sunday's Welcome Back Brunch was a huge success. It was wonderful to see the social hall filled with JCC members greeting each other after the winter. As always, the brunch was delicious and abundant. Our speaker, Jeff Kampf, shared with us the story of the ''Notorious R.B.G'" and her impact on our universe. Raffle prizes were drawn and our winners - all women - went home with goodies from local merchants. Thank you goes to Membership Chairman, Paul Levine, and his committee and the ladies of the WAX (and their husbands) for putting this all together so wonderfully. Special thanks to Diane Buskirk for getting the raffle prizes. | |

NEXT BOOK REVIEW MEETING
Wednesday, July 19th
"Signal Fires"
by Dani Shapiro
Discussion Leader: TBA
Signal Fires opens on a summer night in 1985. Three teenagers have been drinking. One of them gets behind the wheel of a car, and, in an instant, everything on Division Street changes. Each of their lives, and that of Ben Wilf, a young doctor who arrives on the scene, is shattered. For the Wilf family, the circumstances of that fatal accident will become the deepest kind of secret, one so dangerous it can never be spoken.
