A TORAH MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
|
Last week in Parashat Pinchas, God told Moses to climb the heights of Abarim to see the Promised Land, reminding him that he will not be joining the Israelites when they enter that land. For Moses, it must have been a sad moment as he realized with finality that God would not rescind God’s punishment. And yet, according to the Torah, Moses, who argued so often and so vociferously on behalf of the Israelites, is silent when it comes to arguing his own case.
The Midrash; however, tells us that Moses was not silent. Indeed, I recall learning that Moses said something like this to God: “Is it more difficult for You to change Your word than it is to split the Red Sea”?
It seems an odd and imperious question and, according to the Midrash, God gives Moses an answer at the very beginning of Parashat Matot. The answer is supplied when God recites to Moses the laws of the vow. Therein God provides that: “If a man takes an oath…he shall not break his pledge; he must carry out all that has crossed his lips”.
God’s response to Moses’ question is that it would, indeed, be more difficult for God to change the Divine word than it was to split the Red Sea. Since God uttered those words with meaning and with intent, God would need to carry out the punishment. Anything less would not be appropriate.
Our promises are important and our pledges matter. God is letting Moses know that every word that comes out of our mouths has an impact. Thus, every word must be treated as a vow. Every utterance as an oath.
Imagine a world in which everything a person says or promises is true. We should remember this lesson for ourselves. It is important for our selves but, perhaps more importantly, we need to model this behavior to our children and grandchildren.

The fast commemorates the destruction of both the First Temple and Second Temple in Jerusalem, which occurred about 655 years apart, but on the same Hebrew calendar date.

Parashat Matot-Masei
Numbers 30:2-36:13
Here Reading
Matot (“Tribes”) opens with laws about vows, and continues to describe the Israelites’ war against the Midianites and the allocation of spoils. The tribes of Reuben and Gad request to dwell outside of the Land of Israel, and Moses acquiesces on the condition that they help conquer it. Masei (“Travels”), the final Torah portion in the Book of Numbers, opens with a list of places that the Israelites traveled in the desert. God commands the Israelites to destroy idolatry in the Land of Israel, outlines Israel’s boundaries, and details the laws of cities of refuge for accidental killers.

AUGUST BOOK
Wednesday, August 17 at 4:00 PM
by Maggie Anton
Hisdadukh, blessed to be beautiful and learned, is the youngest child of Talmudic sage Rav Hisda. The world around her is full of conflict. Rome, fast becoming Christian, battles Zoroastrian Persia for dominance while Rav Hisda and his colleagues struggle to establish new Jewish traditions after the destruction of Jerusalem's Holy Temple. Against this backdrop Hisdadukh embarks on the tortuous path to become an enchantress in the very land where the word 'magic' originated.
A Zoom link will be sent shortly before the event.
