Thanks to a special donation from Andrew Mac of AMAC Pharmacy Services, the weeklong Dream Cruise activities on Jewish Senior Life campuses brought residents, guests, and staff together for a great time. Events included sock-hop-themed live music, Elvis impersonators, jugglers, and a parade of vintage autos. As we waited for the cruise to begin, participants bopped to fifties and Motown tunes as staff in poodle skirts and scarves served the drivers and their passengers a special box lunch. Residents whooped, hollered, applauded, and waved checkered flags at the parade of antique autos that circled the campus. We were delighted to have Channel 7 News reporter, Kimberly Craig there to report on the festivities and interview residents and staff. Our wonderful JSL Dream Cruise made the news!!!

Activities in all JSL buildings brought out the best energy in everyone. Fleischman hosted Elvis on stilts who juggled as musical entertainment and sweet treats from the Ice Cream truck brought joy to all present. Arnie Collins drove his shiny vintage 1939 Ford and let the residents pose for pictures and peek inside.

FRIENDS of Jewish Senior Life is looking for volunteers to help with some fun and interesting activities. Please take a look and let us know if one of these sounds like it’s up your alley. Or, if you have a passion you’d like to share, let’s come up with a program!
SOUP, SALAD and SANDWICHES – Have fun socializing and serving residents at the Krolik Café on Thursdays from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm.
THE JOY OF YARN – If you’re a knitter who would like to share your skills, we’re looking for a knitting instructor to lead a class of impressive lifelong knitters at Meer.
WHAT’S NEW? – Can you lead a current events discussion in a factual, balanced way for a lively conversation once a week? Help residents understand what’s going on locally and around the world.
FITNESS FANS - Former instructors? Lifelong exercise buffs? Lead the folks at Meer, Hechtman, Brown Center and Coville in exercise sessions.
Please email or call Beth Robinson at brobinson@jslmi.org / 248-592-5062 for more information or to sign up. Or click the link below to fill out the volunteer form.

Chocolate Pecan Pie Ice Cream

1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup corn syrup
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup whole pecans
56 ounces (1.65 liters) pareve Chocolate ice cream, slightly softened
Directions
1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
2) In a medium bowl, mix brown sugar, corn syrup, egg, salt, and cinnamon until smooth. Use your hands to break the pecans into smaller pieces and add them in. Mix well.
3) Spoon into the baking pan, leaving no goo behind. Bake for one hour or until the top has light bubbles that are set. Allow to cool.
4) Carefully separate any shards of hard sugar that have formed along the edges for garnish. Spoon the rest of the filling into the ice cream and carefully mix until the elements are lightly layered and mixed together but not completely combined. Top with sugar shards. Freeze completely.

Woodward Avenue & the Dream Cruise
Our local Woodward Avenue was chosen many years ago to be the road upon which classic vintage vehicles cruise and bring much joy and nostalgia to locals and to visitors from afar.
Historically, Woodward Avenue was the first paved road in the USA. For that reason, it is considered the Number 1 Highway.
For years, the dream cruise provided a great weekend of entertainment. Let us take a moment to entertain ourselves with what might be considered the soul and spirit of Woodward Avenue.
The first paved road marks the first smooth terrain and journey. Prayer is our spiritual journey. Our goal is for our prayers to reach heaven on a paved and smooth path, like those vehicles that majestically peruse Woodward Avenue. To whom are we reaching out in prayer? To the only ONE (# 1 highway) - namely our Creator.
As our community becomes a welcoming spot this weekend for many who come to observe the annual Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise, let us hope that our personal journey of prayer travel on a paved road reaching the One Above. Currently, the WAS - Woodward Avenue Shul is proudly situated on Woodward Avenue (just north of the zoo). It is a warm and homey place where one could shed their heartfelt prayers.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
