Come visit and meet our superlative staff, dynamic residents and witness the JSL difference firsthand.
Meer resident, Doris Rosen might invite you to come to her apartment and listen to why she feels safe and happy to reside here. Edith Maniker, a holocaust survivor, may wave from her balcony and chat about her family stories. Karen Gale, Resident Service Coordinator might be assisting a resident with a problem. Myriam Cohen, Program Coordinator is busy planning surprises for the residents to participate in joyously. Meer Administrator, Marcia Mittelman greets everyone with a smile and knows her residents, treating them all like family. Robert or another volunteer will greet you at the door, take your temperature and tell you about his grandchildren. Jackie Rosender, Independent Living Leasing Consultant will be walking with you around the campus to choose the apartment that works best.
The JSL Difference is that we are one big family. We care about each other. We long to sit closely again, holding hands and sharing stories. But we know what we must do in this new normal with COVID protocols and steadfastly try to be as safe as possible for the welfare of one another. JSL CARES.
Our core values of INTEGRITY are evident as we act with honesty and uphold the highest ethical standards. We demonstrate COMPASSION and COLLABORATION, treating everyone with sensitivity and empathy. We build strong, inclusive, and vibrant communities where no one feels alone. We demonstrate ACCOUNTABILITY and ADVOCACY, responsible to those we serve, employ, and to each other. We advocate for public policies that support older adults. And we bring together services to promote aging with dignity and choice that maximize independence. We show honor, RESPECT, consideration and kindness and we embrace and appreciate diversity. We provide outstanding residential communities and services, as we focus on innovating and shaping the future of aging services. Our EXCELLENCE shows through as we serve to distinguish our agency from other retirement communities. We support the personal growth and development of our residents and invite you to come for a visit to any of our older adult communities. Come celebrate life with JSL.

BROWN CENTER FEATURED IN JN
|
By Ashley Zlatopolsky
During Parkinson’s Awareness Month in April, it’s more important than ever to understand the power of music on slowing neurological diseases.
Every time Laura Kienscherf heard music, she couldn’t help but dance, sing or hum along.
Kienscherf was diagnosed with dementia, and although she battled the progressive neurological disease daily, music would bring her pure joy.
“She was so happy,” said son Daryn Kienscherf, 55, of Royal Oak, recalling his mother’s reaction to music. “It put her back in time to a place where life was simpler, and she wasn’t in pain.”

BILLY CRYSTAL AND TIFFANY HADDISH STAR IN A NEW, VERY JEWISH MOVIE
|
By Lior Zaltzman
Two of our favorite Jewish comedians, Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish, are apparently BFFs. If that’s not kvell-worthy enough, the pair stars in a new, super-Jewish movie premiering next month! That’s right — we’ll get to enjoy their incredible chemistry and comedic chops in a full-length feature film.
Here Today is directed and produced by Crystal, and co-written by Crystal with veteran Jewish comedy writer Alan Zweibel. Crystal tantalizingly describes the film as a “romantic comedy without the romance.” It comes out May 7, and while I tried to curb my expectations when I heard of this almost too-good-to-be-true project, I have to admit that the first trailer looks very promising.

BEHIND THE MASK: Meet our Devoted JSL Family
|
Jill Bengle has lived in West Bloomfield for 16 years. She has worked for JSL since 2016, beginning at Meer, and now she is the Sales and Marketing Consultant for the Fleischman Residence and Memory Care Pavilion. Jill says the residents are her inspiration 100%. “It gives me so much joy to be able to help them. I strive to enrich their lives in any way I can! She says, “I just love listening to the residents. Their stories make me laugh and their advice gives me a meaningful perspective, it makes my days at Fleischman feel like I am with family.”
Her advice to staff and residents who are coping with the pandemic is to “be patient with each other, and this is not easy on any of us. It will eventually pass, and be a distant memory, and we will look back at what a strange and challenging time this was.”
Jill and her husband of 17 years have two teenage boys, and they have a Goldendoodle puppy named Walter, who keeps them very busy these days. She loves being active, taking walks, participating in fitness bootcamps, boating and swimming. She loves everything outdoors.
After the pandemic, she plans to travel. “I enjoy going to new places. Exploring and making new memories with my family and friends is invaluable. My friends and family bring me joy and happiness. I love to make people laugh. I love making people feel like they matter. Family time is so important to me. I spend a lot of time watching my boys play baseball and football. I look forward to spending time with my extended family, parents, siblings and all my nephews.”
Thank you Jill for all you do at Jewish Senior Life.

Moroccan Salmon
Main ingredients
1/2 cup oil
20 cloves garlic, whole (or if preferred, sliced for a slightly stronger flavor)
4-5 tomatoes, quartered if you prefer a chunky result, or grated for a saucier dish
1-2 potatoes, cut into desired shape
5 red bell peppers, sliced
2 jalapeño peppers, cut in rings or whole
1 tablespoon Gefen Cumin
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon Gefen Garlic Powder
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (to taste)
salt, to taste
cilantro, for garnish
4 (6-ounce) slices skinless salmon
1 lemon, sliced
Prepare the Moroccan Salmon
1. Cover the bottom of a large, flat-bottomed sauté pan with olive oil.
2. Once the oil is hot, add garlic. Sauté for two to three minutes over medium high flame.
3. Add tomatoes to pan and lower heat. Sauté for two to three minutes.
4. Add potatoes to pan. Layer in peppers and jalapenos.
5. Add olive oil if needed to make sure everything is lightly coated. Let cook four to five minutes until everything begins to get tender. Add paprika, garlic powder, cumin, black pepper, red pepper flakes and salt. Stir to incorporate. Cover and let simmer over a low heat for at least an hour, stirring every 20 minutes.
6. Add salmon to sauce, submerging it and covering it with the sauce. Cover and let cook for 15 minutes.
7. Add lemon slices and cilantro to top and cover for three to five more minutes.

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, JSL Community Chaplain
Log into Lag BaOmer
Lag BaOmer (Friday, April 30th) marks a festive day in the Jewish calendar. It is the anniversary of the passing of the great sage, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. Through his writing of the book of the Zohar, (a mystical work) he taught us the inner wisdom of the Torah. Prior to his passing, he encouraged all to rejoice every year on his anniversary of passing for that was the day when he was reconnected with G-d. Here is how we rejoice:
- Major festivities are celebrated in Meron, the mountain village in northern Israel where he is interred. Tens of thousands of visitors pour in from all corners of the world to rejoice together in unity.
- Young and old spend the day outdoors enjoying the natural beauty of G-d’s world. During these outings, it is customary for the children to play with bows and arrows. The bow is symbolic of the rainbow which did not appear during Rabbi Shimon’s lifetime. This was a sign that his virtues alone protected his generation. There was no need for a rainbow as a reminder that no flood would be brought on the world again as it occurred in the days of Noah.
- Recognizing the fiery spirit of the mystical teachings that are celebrated on this day, bonfires are kindled. Friends come together and it becomes a wonderful opportunity for singing, sharing and enjoying each other’s camaraderie. · Customary foods for the day include carob (which miraculously sustained Rabbi Shimon and his son when they were hiding from the Romans).
- Children join together in special grand parades as a show of Jewish unity and pride.
- Lag BaOmer is noted to be a day of miracles. Prepare your wish list, perform a mitzvah and have faith in the day. Miracles do happen.
