This week JSL staff attended Therapy Session #2 with Betsy Stone, PhD. She provided guidance on what our brains have been dealing with during the Pandemic. Our brains need recovery. There has been a shift in personality for some. Many have caused themselves harm and some have taken their own lives. These times have changed all of us.
We knew before COVID that there were significant inequalities in society. Health Inequality and diversity inequality are issues we continue to discuss. The Pandemic has intensified many problems that were there before the outbreak. While COVID has made our burdens heavier and our challenges greater we can learn from them. This is where post traumatic growth comes in, as Betsy explained. Traumatic growth is about turning adversity around to learn from it and make ourselves stronger.

JSL COUPLES SHARE MARRIAGE ADVICE WITH JN

Whether you’re single, married or anything in-between, Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love. Sometimes, people fall in love at a young age, while others fall in love later in life. In Jewish Metro Detroit, there are thousands of love stories each unique in their own way. Here are two examples of how love can take form, grow and evolve with time, sometimes surprising us all.

Every year, LeadingAge Michigan, our State association of non-profit senior care organizations, bestows the Shining Star Award to a very special professional. This year's winner is Laura Shields, Meer Dining Services Manager. Laura was recognized for her patience, dedication, work ethic, creativity, and her loving treatment of residents and staff. Laura will take a bow at the Annual Conference of LeadingAge Michigan held in Lansing in May.
Additionally, 40+ community volunteers who came to our assistance in the dining rooms this year will be recognized with the Volunteers of the Year Award. These special volunteers set tables and rolled silverware and did what was necessary to support our dining staff and residents during a most difficult time in our community.

HONOREE & STUDENT INTRODUCTIONS
|
Yesterday JSL introduced the 8 over 80 honorees to eight Frankel Jewish Academy students who will interview them for our 29th Annual Eight Over Eighty Event that takes place May 22 at Noon on Zoom. We explained our JSL mission to all present including the parents of the students, the students themselves, the friends and children and grandchildren of the honorees and our incredible planning committee with co-chairs, including JSL staff. Through Zoom technology, we met and learned about amazing older adults and their lives and backgrounds. And we learned about the students who have larger than life resumes at Frankel.

Perfect No-Fry Eggplant Rollatini
Ingredients
3 long, smooth, and firm eggplants
2 eggs
1 cup Parmesan, divided
1 and 1/2 cups mozzarella, divided
1 (24.3-ounce) jar Marinara
2 cups ricotta
2 cloves garlic, minced
Salt to taste
Pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons chopped parsley for garnish
Directions
1) Slice eggplants lengthwise (1/8 inch thick). Sprinkle kosher salt over all and set aside.
2) Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Spread a little marinara sauce into the bottom of a nine-inch round oven-to-tableware.
3) Combine eggs, half of mozzarella and half of parmesan, ricotta, garlic, salt, and pepper.
4) Pat eggplants dry. Brush with olive oil and bake for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through.
5) When eggplants are ready, remove from the oven (do not turn it off) and spoon about a tablespoon of the cheese mixture onto each eggplant slice. Roll up and place in the prepared pan, seam side down. Top with the rest of the marinara sauce and remaining cheeses.
6) Bake at 400 for 30 minutes covered and 15 minutes uncovered.

Kvellentine's Day
Many American men will have barely recovered from the exertion of watching the Super Bowl when they are forced into preparing for an even more strenuous event: Valentine's Day. As men jam floral shops across the country, they will mutter curses about the implied extortion of February 14. Let's be honest: this is an artificial holiday that essentially says: buy me jewelry, candy and flowers to show me you love me -- or else!
I ask you: Is this any way to run a romance?
When I was single, I was too naïve to realize that the men I saw carting candies and flowers through the streets on Valentine's Day were not displaying any spontaneous outpouring of love for the women in their lives. Not a chance! They were acting on a primal survival instinct warning them that if they dared appear at home without so much as a dozen roses (even if purchased from the gas station) they'd be facing several nights of solitary confinement on the couch.
