Yom HaShoah Program
Educates, Moves, and Inspires
|
After the two-minute silence, students and faculty came into the Beit Knesset to the drum beat played by Senior Yoni Katz. TABC's Yom HaShoah program began with a presentation by senior
Eli Tennenbaum who provided a student's perspective on the Shoah. Eli's powerful and erudite words set the tone for what was to be a moving, inspirational, and meaningful program. Senior Avinoam Wizman served as emcee for the candle lighting ceremony. In turn, he introduced Moshe Golubtchik '19, Ari Kaminetzky '20, Max Krantz ' 19, Dovid Pearlman '19, Yoni Weinreich '19, Yoav Zolty ' 19, each of whom told the story of their relatives who were victims of Nazi cruelty during the Holocaust, and then lit a candle in their memory or honor. Senior Jacob Blumenthal and Freshman Nani Rudnitzky read
poems which moved the audience greatly. Mr. Aryeh Tiefenbrunn led Mrs. Reichardt's Holocaust Studies class in singing
Oyfn Pripetshik
and
Last Night I Had A Dream I Was In Heaven,
accompanied by Senior Seth Maza
.
During the singing, a Power Point presentation created by Bill Bradin about his father, our guest speaker which included historical photos and information, was shown in the background. Senior Oren Neuwirth introduced the guest speaker Mr. Samuel Judkiewicz Bradin who described his personal experiences growing up in Poland and during the Shoah. His talk was inspirational and he answered students' questions afterward. In one answer, he made it clear to all that there was no place for Jews to go due to immigration restrictions in Palestine, the United States and elsewhere. Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Adler concluded the program with an emotional recitation of Kel Maleh Rachamim. All in attendance were not only left with Mr. Bradin's directive of continuing to tell the story, but also gained a deeper appreciation for the miracle of the State of Israel. TABC would like to thank Ms. Donna Hoenig for spearheading the event, as well as Ms. Marita Poline, Mrs. Cary Reichardt, Mr.Ken Harris, Mr. Hemda Cohen, and Mr. Aryeh Tiefenbrunn for all their help. TABC Seniors Mentor He'Atid Sixth Graders in STEM Makerspace
|
On Tuesday, April 16th, TABC invited Yeshivat He'Atid's students into the TABC Makerspace for a coding lesson! Six of our 12th grade engineering students (Ariel Gross, Avi Gold, Moshe Golubtchik, Yonatan Katz, Natan Mendelson, and Yoni Zirman) planned out a coding lesson for the 6th grade Yeshivat He'Atid science class. The lesson focused on Arduino coding, LED lights, and electrical wiring. At the end of the lesson, once the 6th graders had mastered the basics, our students showed them some of their advanced engineering projects so they could see the bigger picture of what one can accomplish with STEM. TABC students handled themselves like pros, helping out the 6th graders when they were having trouble and patiently making sure they understood each step of the way. The Yeshivat He'Atid students left excited for future opportunities to explore the world of STEM, and TABC students were thrilled with the experience of sharing what they had learned this year. TABC wishes to thank their STEM Coordinator, Mr. Aryeh Tiefenbrunn for organizing the program, and Yeshivat He'Atid's science teacher, Mr. Noah Kalter for coordinating it on their end.

College Bowl Teams Victorious
|
The famed and phenomenal TABC Storm College Bowl team took home JV and Varsity Championships Thursday. Junior Varsity, coming with an undefeated season, including a shutout game against JEC, had a strong outlook for the championships. Ephraim Helfgot '20, Yehuda Mazin '21, Mikey Schwartz '20, Sam Weinberg '20, Ezriel Vinar '21, Boaz Kapitnaker '21 and Shai Rosenberg '20 were all there planning on carrying on the JV streak of 6 undefeated seasons. While all of them played well throughout, they faced stiff competition in two tight games, beating HAFTR in the Semis and Rambam in the Championship. Varsity was nervous, as they were without Captain and league MVP Nathanael Vinar, who was in Israel for Chidon Hatanach. Yet they did not disappoint, beating rival Frisch once in an added game playoff, Rambam in the Semis, and squeaked by Frisch in a nail-biting championship game for the ages. All 4 varsity players (Daniel Rothstein '20, Avraham Kahan '19, Aharon Goldstein '19, and Yoni "Switch-Hitter" Weinreich '20) played exceptionally, but Rothstein, in particular, garnered praise for his machine-like consistency and skill. Both teams were led by Manny "the GOAT" Landau, whose cool and experienced hand was invaluable in guiding TABC to the twin victories. The players also pointed to TABC's strong culture of independent learning as a decisive factor in the win.

Spotlight on Navi at TABC
|
A hallmark of TABC has always been a balanced emphasis on Gemara and Tanach ever since Rabbi Adler joined TABC twenty six years ago. A specific opportunity for juniors and seniors is an in-depth study of Navi. Alternating years focus on Sefer Yonah/Five Megillot and Sefer Melachim.
Rebbeim choose to focus on sefarim with a rich array of mefarshim such as Sefer Yonah and Megillat Rut. The time spent taking a deep dive into these sefarim yields a lifetime of rewards as the students are reminded year after year of their learning when these sefarim are read as part of our tefillot on special occasions such as Yom Kippur and Shavuot.
Our most veteran Nach Rebbe is Rabbi Jachter who has already transformed one semester of TABC learning into a well-received sefer entitled "The Depths of Yonah: Unleashing the Power of Your Yom Kippur". Currently, together with senior Nachum (Ned) Krasnopolsky, Rabbi Jachter is preparing a work on Sefer Melachim to be entitled "From David to Destruction: Mining Essential Lessons from Sefer Melachim". In both sefarim virtually every chapter contains original insights from Rabbi Jachter's talmidim throughout the years.
The shiurim span the full range of classic mefarshim and are spiced with newer insights afforded by recent archaeological and historical discoveries. The Navi is explored in depth to reveal deep hashkafic lessons in each and every shiur. Most importantly, each day's learning is capped off with a lesson to propel us to be better Jews and better people. In some of the learning (such as Sefer Yonah) a pasuk by pasuk methodology is employed. In other areas (such as Sefer Melachim) a broader-based approach is more suitable for mining the essential teachings.
Rebbeim often collaborate in creating the most compelling learning experiences and maximizing student buy-in. "The result," comments Head of School, Rabbi Asher Yablok, "is a Tanach program whose quality and richness of learning is simply unmatched in any Jewish school throughout North America."

Elie Jarashow '19 Reflects on his Write On for Israel Experience
|
TABC senior, Elie Jarashow was a member of the 2019 Write on For Israel cohort, along with fellow seniors Alex Ostrin and Eli Rifkind. As its website states, "Since 2002, The NY Jewish Week's Write On For Israel program has educated and engaged more than 750 top high school students on Israel and the Middle East, empowering them to become leaders and influencers in the pro-Israel community when they get to college. Using the lens of journalism, Write On transforms Jewish teens into confident spokespeople and opinion leaders in preparation for the challenges they will face at college and beyond."
Elie reflected on his experiences during the group's trip to Israel where they met with both Israeli and Palestinian teens and leaders. Please enjoy his riveting article, entitled Conflicted Over The Conflict: Welcome to Israel, where all answers lead to questions. |

Varsity Soccer Wins Regular Season Finale
Barnstormer Over Thunder
Put this one in the record books. The Varsity Soccer team won an ultimate classic over the JEC Thunder 11-10 in their final game of the regular season in a match that may go down as one of the most memorable of the MYHSAL soccer season. The two teams traded goals throughout the first quarter, heading into the latter part of the first half tied at four. The Storm were shut out the entire second quarter with JEC scoring two goals late in the half, and the Storm headed into the locker room down 6-4. But senior captain Yonadav Rimberg took matters into his own hands- or feet- to kick off the second half, scoring two goals and assisting on another to give the Storm a 7-6 lead. After another tying goal from the Thunder, Natan Rifkind '20, Daniel Becker '20, and Daniel Deschino '19 gave the Storm their largest lead of the game at 10-7 heading into the final quarter. Unfortunately, JEC was able to claw its way back and score three unanswered goals as well and the game was once again tied, this time at 10-10. It was clear whoever scored the next goal was going to be the hero. Enter senior Yechiel Keiser. While his initial shot rang off the post, Keiser was the first one to react and knocked home the rebound to give the Storm their final lead of the night. Senior Avraham Kahan made some phenomenal saves in net to seal the Thunder's fate and the fans stormed the court to celebrate the big victory. The team finishes the regular season with a 7-1 record and now waits to see who they will meet in the first round of the playoffs.
The JV team also won on the road at Frisch 4-3 to win the division and earn home court advantage throughout the playoffs. What a night for TABC soccer!
