Storm Defeat Falcons in Tightly Contested Battle to Advance to
Semi-Finals

The Flatbush Falcons traveled to Teaneck, NJ to take on the TABC Storm on a nice Tuesday night. TABC scored immediately on a goal from Akiva Hain, assisted by Avraham Gellman. Throughout the duration of the period, TABC was firing shots at the Flatbush goalie, to no avail. The period ended with TABC maintaining the 1-0 lead. TABC came out flying to start the 2nd period, scoring a goal within the first 10 seconds, Gellman assisted by Hain. TABC continued to bombard Flatbush with shots, but the goalie stood tall. TABC fended off some Flatbush chances to keep the 2-0 lead after 2. To begin the third period, the play was more or less even, with chances going both ways. Avinoam Wizman scored on an assist by Ben Englander two and a half minutes into the third. Play continued to favor TABC and with five and a half minutes remaining, Eli Schiff found the back of the net, with much help from Eli Spinowitz. With about two and a half minutes remaining, Flatbush finally broke through to end Charles Gibber's shutout bid, with a jam-in goal. TABC staved off some good Flatbush opportunities to close the door on the 4-1 W. Stellar defense by ET Dubin, Andy Katz, Yechiel Keiser, and Yonatan Naor helped Gibber get the win. TABC now faces  at home HAFTR in the semi-finals on March 13th.
Storm Takes Down Hawks in
Double OT
Thursday night March 2nd, the Storm traveled to HAFTR to battle the Hawks in a rematch from last years championship. Both teams came out strong, with chances by both teams thwarted by the TABC goalie and the HAFTR goalie. The game remained scoreless into the third when TABC put one in to go up 1-0. HAFTR was relentless on their attack and with 11.4 seconds left found the back of the net to tie it up. Both teams had solid chances during the first overtime but it was the Storm that took the game with a goal 10 seconds into the second overtime to move onto the semis.

Book Day 2017 an Extraordinary Success
"The day was amazing!"
"We should have Book Day everyday!"

The excitement for Book Day 2017 was palpable. The entire school - students, administration, faculty and staff - had read Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell, and gathered on Thursday, March 2nd, to discuss the book and its lessons. Our first speaker, Mr. Yoni Ellman, TABC wrestling coach and partner at Group 8A, a boutique digital marketing agency, set the tone for the day with his objective and then personal discussion of success. After snapping our fingers to the beat of Lin Manuel Miranda's rap rendition of "Alexander Hamilton," from Hamilton, Mr. Cory Richman, entertainment agent for Lin-Manuel Miranda and countless other celebrities, engaged our students with a powerful discussion about being an Orthodox Jew in the entertainment world and the importance of maintaining one's principles. The day continued with workshops in the morning and afternoon, some given by our own faculty, some by outside presenters, and some by our alumni who have each succeeded in their own field of expertise. In the afternoon, the students could also choose from a student-led workshop given by the twelfth grade speech class. Mr. Lior Hod, famous YU basketball player and founder and president of ELLKAY, one of the world's premier healthcare information technology companies, closed the day with his amazing story of success. Organized by our librarian Mrs. Moskovits and English Chairperson Dr. Master, this Book Day was a true success!  For more photos, click here, and for a beautiful letter written by a student to Dr. Master and Mrs. Moskovits click here.

Alumni a Big Hit at Book Day!

As TABC students gathered to discuss secrets of success on Book Day this Thursday focusing on Malcolm Gladwell's work "Outliers", highly successful alumni joined to enrich the students' perspectives on the varied paths to success.  Rabbi Ben Skydell '95 addressed success in the rabbinate and Jewish education, Yonatan Pomrenze '96 described his journey as a producer for CNN, Yitz Rosenberg '99 described his path to success in finance  and shared with the students ten things he wishes he had learned before he started working, Dov Rosenblatt '99 and Ami Kozak '04 described (via skype from Los Angeles) their path as musicians, Chaim Kagedan '00 told of his success in law, Aaron Safier '01 described his ventures in finance, Gabe Gilbert '03 and MB Klyman '03 described their success in marketing healthy eating and exercise, Chaim Strauss '07 explained his path to success in bio engineering and Tzvi Solomon '09 explained how students should begin in high school to forge their path to success.

Students overwhelmingly reported their great enjoyment, satisfaction and gain from the alumni presentations.  Rabbi Adler marveled at seeing the dazzling variety of success of our alumni and expressed deep gratitude for their participation.  The entire TABC administration and faculty look forward to the continued growth and success of all of our alumni.

TABC Inducts Students into
National Honor Society
We are proud to announce that on Friday, February 5th, 35 TABC seniors were inducted into the Segula Chapter of the National Honor Society. Membership is based on scholarship, service, leadership and character.

Friday's ceremony began with introductory remarks by Rabbi Ezra Wiener, followed by keynote speaker Dr. Ari Mermelstein, assistant professor of Bible at Yeshiva University, who gave an inspirational message to the inductees.  Mr. Poleyeff presented each student with a pin and a Certificate of Membership in the National Honor Society.

The induction ceremony was followed by refreshments sponsored by TAPA for the honorees, their parents and grandparents.  Thank you to Cindy Forgash and Teri Normand for all of your help.

Junior Varsity History Bowl Team
Dominates The Competition
On Sunday, February 26th, twenty teams from private schools, public schools and Yeshivot participated in the New York City Regional of the National History Bowl and Bee competition.  Attending students took part in both the History Bee (for individual students) and the History Bowl (for school teams). In the Junior Varsity team competition, the Torah Academy team (Nathanael Viner, Avraham Kahan, Ephraim Helfgot, Yoav Zolty, Daniel Rothstein) dominated winning each of its five matches by over 100 points each.  After the five rounds the TABC junior varsity was crowned champions again.  The TABC junior varsity has won the New York City championship three of the last four years and in the fourth year they finished second.   The varsity team was able to make the playoff round, but lost in the playoff round on the last question of the final round.

In the individual History Bee competition, TABC did exceptionally well.  In the junior varsity History Bee, Torah Academy once again dominated with four of its students qualifying for the playoff round of the individual tournament.  Nathanael Vinar and
Ephraim Helfgot both made the finals of the playoffs finishing respectively in second and third place in the competition.  On the varsity side Yosef Kahan qualified for the playoff round, but did not make the finals.

Now the team is preparing to compete in the National competition with nine of the team members having qualified to compete in the National tournament in either History Bee or U.S. History Bee.  Of course both our varsity and junior varsity teams qualified for the national tournament.
TABC Poets Perform at NCSY/ Yeshiva Poetry League Prayer Slam
Max Schechter '19 and Nachum Freedman '18 participated in the NCSY/Yeshiva Poetry League Prayer Slam held in the Lincoln Square Synagogue. Participants were  invited to compose original prayers in a  poetic and meaningful way.  They were then  encouraged to  perform them in an   expressive  manner and to explore both original and deeply personal affects, themes, memories, and questions of religious identity. It was an uplifting and edifying experience for all those involved.

Binghamton University Accepted Student Breakfast

On Tuesday, morning, February 28th Binghamton University held a special breakfast for those TABC students who have already been accepted to their school.  Our admission representative, Cara Tannenbaum greeted the boys with some general information about Binghamton before Nataly Weiss, one of the OU-JLIC educators at the university, discussed Jewish Life on campus.  The presentations were followed by a question and answer period in which all of the accepted students participate.
Y18 Prepares for Book Day
Rabbi Blau's Y18 Chumash shiur discussed the 10,000 hours of practice principle from this year's Book Day book Outliers: The Story of  Success.  The discussion focused on the importance of amalut b'Torah and how there are no shortcuts to putting in the work needed to become  a talmid chacham. The shiur  also brought in parallels from athletes who did not rely on their innate talent, but rather would practice incessantly to improve their skills.
10H2's Socratic Seminar
Ms. Burstein's 10H2 English class participated in a two-part Socratic seminar  on Wednesday  and  Friday . During the seminar, students took turns assuming the roles of speaker, listener, and observer. Four students at a time sat in the center of a circle (deemed the "fishbowl"), while the rest of the class observed and took notes on the conversations. The discussions centered around Mary Shelly's  Frankenstein.   Students considered ethical questions on topics such as great scientific knowledge and advancement, a parent's responsibility (or lack of responsibility) for a child's actions, and the effects of loneliness on an individual who is secluded from society. The students demonstrated impressive analytic skills and developed deep insights as they conversed with and listened to one another.
Matmidim Visit Yeshiva University
TABC Matmidim and their rebbe, Rabbi Malitzky spent a recent afternoon at YU.
After eating a delicious lunch at the famed Golan and perusing the large collection of seforim and books at the YU Seforim Sale, students had the privilege of hearing two amazing shiurim from great Torah personalities.

First, students heard a Chumash shiur from Rav Aharon Ciment, a rebbe in YU and Rav of Congregation Arzei Darom in Teaneck. Rav Ciment spoke about hard work and the need to toil and exert effort in areas of learning and in our interpersonal relationships.

After davening Mincha in the YU Beit Midrash, the highlight of the trip was words of inspiration from Rav Yitzchak Cohen who energized us all!
