Wishing you a healthy and sweet New Year. Isn’t good health the ultimate wish? We welcome the Days of Awe and the New Year 5782. In celebration of defining moments and milestones in our lives, we are grateful for new possibilities and anticipated joys. We feel so close to our loved ones yet continue to remain physically distant due to COVID related variants, seasonal flus, and the coming cold season. The holidays suggest we use each meaningful moment for prayer to reflect on our year, letting go of the losses and disappointments and finding gratitude for goodness with hope for change. And I ask myself regularly, how can we make a positive difference for ourselves and for those we care about?
Thanks to your generous gifts, you have made the difference with your support of our residents through it all. We have been treated to very special musical performances and educational lectures and events by the DSO through the Nancy Katzman Family Connection Fund at Temple Israel and through the continued support from the Alice Egrin Fund, and The Ella Baker Lecture and Music Series Fund. Our plan is to continue musical programming and fascinating lectures in collaboration with the JHSM and others. Here are some of our current offerings: Torah Talks with Rabbi Polter, Shofar Blowing with Harry, a variety of art classes including Beading with Carol Cranston, the always popular BINGO, Stories with Sy, Tea time, The Good News Network, Understanding Yiddish with Shirley Benyas, Entertainment with Dana Stern, A Taste of Shabbat with DeDe Domstein, Music with Michael, Visits and Pet Therapy, Mind Joggers, Flower Arranging, Touch Town films, Exercise with Michelle O’Connell, Michelle Black, Barbara Cohn and Lisa Fine, Current Events with Cyma Carn, Computer Games, Table Games, Schmooze with Su, Bus trips, Maintain Your Brain, Cardio Drumming, Jewish History with Rabbi Rosenzweig, Shabbat Services, Challah Baking, and Singalongs. Our dedicated Life Enrichment Directors at all the campuses are constantly coming up with new ideas to keep JSL residents busy, happy and fulfilled.
“On Rosh Hashanah, it is inscribed and on Yom Kippur, it is sealed.” May G-d inscribe us in the Book of Life for another year. Although none of us can know who shall reach ripe old age, it is within each of us to choose to celebrate every day we are given.
At Jewish Senior Life we are dedicated to honoring the gift of ripe old age that our residents bring. We believe that no matter the length of our days, continued appreciation of the sanctity of life, the beauty and goodness in our world, and the value of friendship and connection are essential.
As we enter this holy season, let us continue to reflect on what we have rather than on what we may have lost or never had. Whatever our struggles or transgressions, and whatever our age, we can change the course of our future, through the Torah prescription of repentance, prayer, and charity.
Shanah tova u’metukah
May it be a good and sweet New Year for us all.

Sways and Sighs
A highlight of Rosh Hashanah (New Year) is reading the moving story of a righteous woman named Chanah. Childless for many years, Chanah beseeched her Creator for the gift of a precious child. She promised to dedicate this child to G-d and His sacred service.
“Only her lips were moving but her voice was not heard.” She prayed a passionate prayer of which only she could know its depth. Due to her unusual voiceless and deeply emotional behavior, even the High Priest present in the Tabernacle accused her of being drunk. Yet, she persisted in reaching an intimate connection with her Creator so that she would be a worthy beneficiary.
Neither her words, content nor unheard voice were as impressionable as her demeanor. It was how she presented herself before her Creator. It was her bodily movements and her heartfelt emotion that conveyed the strongest message of supplication.
In life, it’s often not what or how much we say or do. It is how we say or do that is primary.
Statistics confirms this idea. In 1971 UCLA professor Albert Mehrabian conducted a study with his students. He assigned 55% of the weight of communication to their body language and 38% to the tone and musicality of their voice. He assigned only 7% of their credibility assessment to their actual words.
As in the case of Chanah whose prayers were answered with the birth of the prophet Samuel, may our fervent prayers during Rosh Hashanah and beyond be hearkened. When you pray, engage your heart and emotion. Visualize your benevolent Creator standing before you, ready to accept your every sway and sigh.
May our prayers exceed our words!
