A Broken Yisrael

This week, the picture here of an Israeli flag with its triangles detached and separated made my heart break. This week’s action by the Israeli government, though meant as just a beginning in a series of legislation toward judicial reform, felt like a rip of the last strings of a rope that were just barely holding on. The debate between the coalition and opposition, those for the reforms and those protesting against them, are no longer even about the reforms or the details of the legislation. The actions each side is taking are making it harder and harder to even approach a negotiation table, much less have a civil conversation. To drive the point home even more, this past week we observed Tisha B’Av where we remembered the destruction of both the first and second Temples in Jerusalem. Why was the second Temple destroyed? Because of “blind hatred”, because Jews were pitted against Jews, because we couldn’t figure out how to govern ourselves without breaking out into war.

Join me Shabbat morning where we will delve into more detail about what happened (and is happening), what it means for Israel’s future, and how we might feel a bit comforted on this Shabbat Nachamu (Shabbat of comfort after Tisha B’av).

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Blatt

Check out the Jewish history of Barbie.

And, though a bit dated, this short film called "The Tribe" helps us understand why Barbie is a great representative of the Jewish American experience.
