How can we translate this pasuk, verse, from this week’s Parsha?

The people of Israel shall guard the Shabbat,

doing Shabbat for generations as a covenant for all time.

OR

The children of Israel (Jacob) shall protect the Sabbath day,

observing it within their dwelling places as an ordinance of the world.

OR

The members of the tribes of Israel shall celebrate Shabbat,

making Shabbat for their future generations as a pledge forever.

Although this line could be interpreted several different ways, the message is always clear.  Shabbat is important.  Shabbat is important for us to take seriously.  Shabbat is a day where we are busy with God.  This is something that will affect the entire world for all time.

However you look at it, Shabbat is a time of doing. We protect Shabbat.  This could mean that we follow its laws.  Or it could mean that we make it special by having dinner that night.  Or coming to pray in our sanctuary.  Or being with community.  It means you do something to mark that moment.

How do you make Shabbat special throughout your home?  In your dwelling place?  For your generation?  For future generations?  For the world?

I hope you'll share with me your experience of Shabbat!

Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Blatt
