A Day of Rest

Building a sanctuary, a mishkan, a holy community, it is hard work.  It takes physical and emotional materials, it takes talent, it takes time and effort, it takes patience and concentration, it takes teamwork and a multitude of artistic processes.  And so at the beginning of this week’s parsha, Parshat Vayakhel, God explains that there is about to be a load of work to be done and throughout this process, until it is done - and it happens to end in the next parsha, Parshat Pekudei which we also read this Shabbat and continuing through time, this work may be done for six days.  But on Shabbat, we must rest.

We may not be in the act, at this point in time, of building a mishkan.  We may not be intimately tied to everyday workings of this synagogue.  But we are all part of a community.  We work hard each day to maintain our space in our home, our family, our city, our society.  To raise and support families.  To make an impact in our lives.  To climb the corporate ladder.  To be productive.  We get tied up in the work.  We get distracted.  We get frustrated.

So the rabbis took any activity that was needed for the construction of the Mishkan and considered it malachah, work.  We can’t do it.  We can’t be distracted.  We have only the responsibility during Shabbat to be present.  To be surrounded by our community, our family, our friends, to priase God and study words of Torah. I hope you get the rest you need in your week and I hope to see you join us on Shabbat.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Blatt

Women's Circle with Maura Astra for Rosh Chodesh Nisan

Wednesday, March 22, at 6:30pm

Rosh Chodesh Nisan is next week and Maura Astra will be offering a women's circle at our congregation. After nearly three years of hosting circles around Israel, she is excited to be back in Tampa and creating sacred spaces for experiential Jewish learning.

Maura will guide us through an opening meditation, an engaging conversation about the kabbalistic (mystic) themes of the new month, and some integration activities to close the circle. This is a women's event for all ages and everyone is welcome, regardless of knowledge or experience. Please message her to confirm that you're coming! Her email is [email protected]
