Torah Reading 238    Haftarah 247
VA-YEISHEV

Jacob's favorite among his twelve sons is Joseph. The favoritism is so blatant that it causes resentment among the brothers - a resentment that is only exacerbated by Joseph's dreams of grandeur. Joseph gets his comeuppance when his brothers strip him of the multi-colored coat given to him by his father, and throw him into a pit. He is subsequently sold by his brothers to Ishmaelites and winds up in servitude in Egypt. The brothers dip Joseph's coat in blood, leading Jacob to believe that Joseph had been killed by a beast.

The narrative of Joseph's life is interrupted by the story of Judah and his sons. Judah's eldest son married Tamar, but this son soon died. In accordance with the custom of levirate marriage, the next son, Onan, was to marry Tamar in order to produce a male heir for his deceased brother. Onan refused to be a party to this, and he too died. Judah, fearing that Tamar was the cause of both sons' deaths, was reluctant to let his youngest son marry her. Disguising herself as a cultic harlot, Tamar seduced her father-in-law, Judah, and bore twins. Judah admitted his error in not requiring his youngest son to enter in levirate marriage with Tamar.

Back in Egypt, Joseph had become the most trusted and favored servant of Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials. Joseph comes to the attention of his mistress; repeatedly rejecting her advances, she exacts revenge by accusing him of attempted rape. Joseph is imprisoned. He wins the favor of his jailer, who gives him a position of responsibility. Joseph correctly interprets the dreams of two of Pharaoh's jailed servants: the baker who will be executed, and the butler, who will return to Pharaoh's service. Joseph implores the butler not to forget him upon his release, for he has been imprisoned unfairly.

Picture of the Week...Maybe of the Century!
The photograph below is truly remarkable! - And it is a learning experience for me that I want to share with you: On the mundane level, I always just assumed that the IDF has strict regulations about hair and facial grooming, yet here is a Haredi young man, not just with a beard, but with payes!
More significantly, I had taken it for granted that if someone from the Haredi community joined the IDF, it meant that s/he was parting ways with his/her community and family of origin (except perhaps for surreptitious contact). Yet here, this young man, who has just completed his 45 km hike with full gear, which marks the culmination of basic training, is greeted warmly and lovingly by his proud father.

Soccer anti-Semitism in Argentina
Cantos antisemitas de la hinchada de All Boys.
Cantos antisemitas de la hinchada de All Boys.

The game was between two Argentinian soccer teams, - the "All Boys" team and "Atlanta". The Atlanta soccer team was founded more than a hundred ago in a Jewish neighborhood. Today it is still assumed by people to be associated with the local Jewish community. However, today it is a local team with no special connection to the Jewish community. But that didn't matter to these fans.
"All boys" fans were upset that their team was losing and then lost, to Atlanta. They let their anger show with the horrific Jew hatred chants. Then, they followed it up with violent rioting in the streets of Buenos Aires and even clashed with the Buenos Aires police.

Airbnb Announces Anti-Semitic West Bank Policy
Justified by its First International Political Statement
Background
Home-rental company Airbnb  announced  it would remove properties in Israeli - primarily Jewish - communities of the West Bank. Last week's  announcement  came alongside the company's  first international political statement , justifying its decision on the claim: "companies should not profit on lands where people have been displaced."
Israeli settlements in the West Bank now join Iran, Syria, North Korea and Russian-occupied Crimea as the only locations where Airbnb's services are unavailable - with one notable difference. In all other forbidden locations, Airbnb
explains : "we are required to comply with international regulations that restrict the use of our site by residents of certain countries." Despite affirming the legality of renting properties in Israeli neighborhoods of the West Bank, this is the only time Airbnb has credited its decision to a political motivation. The company also continues listing properties in  other disputed areas  where people have been displaced, such as Northern Cyprus, Tibet, Western Sahara and Kashmir.
Airbnb's announcement preempted by one day a new
report  criticizing the company for its previous West Bank policy, as well as a forthcoming UN ' blacklist ' report of firms operating in Israeli settlements. It also comes in response to  years of documented pressure  from a  coalition of organizations  advocating for BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) campaigns against Israel. In a letter to Airbnb, the  ADL  stated: "Many of the founding goals of the BDS movement, including denying the Jewish people the universal right of self-determination - along with many of the strategies employed in BDS campaigns - are anti-Semitic."  Some  Jewish-American groups  have called for a boycott of Airbnb over its double standard applied only to Israel.

Talking Points:
  1. Airbnb's policy to boycott only Israeli apartment listings in the West Bank is unacceptable and demonstrates support for a movement whose goals are anti-Semitic. The ban applies a double standard exclusively to Israeli properties there - twice.

      * First, it removes the homes from its service, while allowing every
other non-sanctioned territory containing displaced persons to
        remain.

      * Second, it treats rentals from Israelis differently than those from
Palestinians - despite being in the same area.
    The
Working Definition of Antisemitism - accepted by the U.S. Departments of State and Education, along with ten other countries, specifies how criticism of Israel that crosses the line into delegitimization, demonization or double standards may be a genuine expression of anti-Semitism.

  2. Public institutions, like state pension funds that are shareholders in Airbnb, should demand reversal of the company's new blatantly biased policy. They should check their moral, ethical and legal requirements, as Airbnb's anti-Semitic action may have violated multiple state and federal laws.

  3. Airbnb's discriminatory behavior demonstrates the necessity for Congress to pass the Israel Anti-Boycott Act. U.S. companies, already prohibited from participating in Arab League boycotts of Israel, also would be barred from engaging in UN or any other governmental bans.

Israeli artists Oded Balilty and Tal Shochat provide contrasting yet complementary metaphors for the spirit of their native country:the prickly pear and the fruit tree. Balilty's somber black-and white
"Sabra Traces" series examines the tenacious, thorny, and omnipresent cactus that has come to symbolize native-born Israelis. Shochat's lush, colorful portraits of fruit trees in bloom and full fruit are shot in the fields, but have been isolated against cloth backdrops and groomed for the camera. Balilty, a Pulitzer-prize winning
documentary photographer, captures his country as it is, while Shochat creates an idealized vision, an Edenic Israel made possible by the character traits represented by the sabra.

Keren Anavy's Garden of Living Images, 2018
Sunroom Project Space
Thru December 2, 2018
Glyndor Gallery @ Wave Hill
Creating a conservatory from paintings and industrial materials, Keren Anavy responds to the late-fall season at Wave Hill in her site-specific installation Garden of Living Images. Suspended from the ceiling, groupings of abstract paintings on translucent Mylar dip into shallow pools of ink and correspond to the changing colors and forms of Wave Hill's plants-especially at the Aquatic Garden. The light shining in through the multi-color, cellophane-covered windows further transforms the space into an insular, imagined environment. With mark-making that incorporates deliberation and the element of chance, Anavy considers the relationship between decision-making and the natural and unexpected processes that occurs in a garden-a cultivated landscape.
