Shabbat Inspiration, Worship Schedule, and LifeCycle Notices

Friday, September 15, 2022 / 19 Elul 5782

We apologize for the confusion with yesterday's email. Below are the corrected dates

for the Stolen Beam Series. Shabbat Shalom.

The Stolen Beam Series: A Study of Reparations

In the Talmud (Gittin 55a), there is a dispute between Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel: What ought we do if a house or palace is built on the foundation of a stolen beam? While Shammai argues the whole structure be torn down and the beam returned to its rightful owner, Hillel argues that rather than demolish the palace, the thief should pay the full value of the beam. Neither rabbi suggests that subsequent generations can pretend that the beam was not stolen, or that time rights the wrong. Both rabbis agree that the wrong, unless rectified, makes the entire structure illegitimate.

Beginning the week after Yom Kippur, please join us for a lively, discussion-oriented class called The Stolen Beam Series: A Study of Reparations. The class will meet on four consecutive Wednesday evenings to explore the timely issue of reparations for Black Americans. Here are the specific dates and times:

Wednesday, October 12 | 7: 15 pm | In-Person in Beth Emet's Sukkah

Wednesday, October 19, 26, and November 2 | 7:00 pm | Virtual on Zoom

Our class will address the legacy and aftermath of Black enslavement, what may be owed, and possible ways to do so, as well as what we can learn about this critically relevant topic from both Judaism and other reparation undertakings. The final class will focus on learning about Evanston's widely acclaimed municipal and nonprofit reparations programs as well as Beth Emet's role in concert with other interfaith institutions in supporting Evanston's pathbreaking initiatives. We will learn together by engaging with stimulating and provocative written, video, and audio materials that will spark lively conversations.

The four of us pictured above-Marc Hilton, Lisa Levine, Bobbie Levinson, and Paul Peterson-all of us long-time Beth Emet members, will act as facilitators of The Stolen Beam Series. Our role will be to pose open-ended questions about the assigned materials, to listen attentively, and to encourage engagement and participation. Multiple perspectives will be welcomed and respected.

We encourage you to enroll in this Beth Emet members-only class today, as space will be limited. Here is the link to do so.

We look forward to your registration and actively learning together with you about this timely topic.

Shabbat Shalom,

Marc Hilton, Lisa Levine, Bobbie Levinson, and Paul Peterson

P.S. As you consider whether or not to join us, we hope you will be inspired, as we are, by Pirkei Avot: You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it (2:21).
